My senior overweight cat hates tail touches. Is it arthritis pain?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Most cats do not like to be touched past the head normally. But of this is a sudden behavioral change I would recommend a Vet exam since she is getting older. They can see of she is more painful than normal in her back and be sure she hasn't lost weight. There are glucosamines/chondriotins for cats like Dasuquin and Cosequin. In the mean time don't pet her where she doesn't like. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think Millie could still be showing signs of hyperesthesia even if she is only sensitive at her tail base and lower back. It is also possible that she has arthritis in her hips or back that is causing her to be painful. There are several options to treat her for pain even with her blood pressure issues. It would be a good idea to take her to your veterinarian for an examination to see if anything like pain medications or Adequan injections may help reduce the pain she is experiencing.

Hi there. Older cats can sometimes develop arthritis or other chronic orthopedic issues as they get older. You don't mention if she is declawed or not, but if she is, this would be even more common. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you're able to - if she does have arthritis, there are prescription pain medications that can be used long-term to make her much more comfortable, just like an older human with arthritis issues. In the meantime, you could also try adding a daily joint supplement such as Cosequin along with an omega-2 fatty acid supplement such as Welactin to her food each day. These can both be helpful for arthritis issues in both dogs and cats.

Yes, this is fine to give to your cat. Just be sure to get the one formulated for cats. I do recommend taking her into a vet, however, as she may be painful. Cats can be stoic about pain, and can be quite good at hiding it. If she is in pain, she would benefit from pain medications which the vet can prescribe. Unfortunately you cannot give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would have her seen by a vet in the next day or two. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Whenever there is a behavior change in a cat, we suspect an underlying disease condition or painful area (arthritis for example). With him hunching down I would suspect a possible arthritis and recommend getting him examined by your vet to determine if x-rays are indicated here. Many cats show signs of osteoarthritis on radiographs as seniors even when they don't seem to be obviously painful. Since this is a recent change I'd recommend seeing your vet for a physical exam. If they agree that your cat may have arthritis they might recommend a joint supplement like Dasuquin or a trial of pain medication to see if it helps with mobility.
