Why does my friendly cat bite and swat when I pet her? Is she in pain?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | 3 months and 25 days old | 8 lbs

My cat is very friendly when you walk into the room, calls out for you attention but whenever I touch her she swats at me and bites me. Should I be worried that when I pet her it causes her pain? I would take her to the vet but I don't have the money to do so right now. If there's something I could do at home that would help her that would be awesome.

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

It is very rare that cats suffer from hyperesthesia (over sensitivity to touch to the point that bit cannot uncomfortable) but it is not unheard of. It is thought to be of a neurological origin-and can be very difficult to treat. Sometimes adding a medication called gabapentin has helped in such cases for my clients. I would talk to your veterinarian to see if they think Royal would be a good candidate or if it is strictly behavioral. If behavioral in origin-sometimes feliway diffusers are helpful in calming our feline companions as well.

I hope this helps!
