Why is my cat's bite wound area hard and scabby after treatment?

What you are seeing is likely dead skin and will fall off soon. Once the skin falls off, there will likely be an open wound. Once this happens I would see the veterinarian for a recheck examination as it will need to be cleaned out from infection to ensure healthy tissue grows back in. I hope this helps! Generally, scabs will fall off on their own as they heal. It is difficult to put topical treatment on cats because they are such fastidious groomers and will lick it off. Keep the area clean and dry, and nature should run its course. However if you feel like the wound is worsening or the dermatitis is not improving, have your vet take another look as additional treatments might be needed.

Skin cancer is unlikely at that age. It is more likely that there is an infection there which did not clear up as antibiotics are needed. Bite wounds must be considered always infected. A check up is needed. Your veterinarian will flush the wound first and prescribe local or systemic antibiotics.

Its hard to say because of the hair, but this just looks like a scab from a previous injury. Just try to gently remove this with a gauze soaked in Betadine diluted 50:50 with water. If the scab comes off and the skin underneath appears to be almost healed, then there is no further treatment needed. If there are any signs of infection however which includes: discharge, an opening of the skin, muscle exposure, etc, then this needs to be treated by your vet with a course of antibiotics. However, it is very likely this is an old wound that is nearly healed already and the scab is just trying to fall off. I would recommend for your kitty to see the veterinarian. Infections tend to heal significantly faster and with less complications with antibiotics. You also will need to make sure he does not lick at the wound as this will make it worse. Have him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times and keep him indoors until it is healed.
