My cat ate Decutan acne pills. Is it dangerous? What should I do?

Hello. I am sorry that your question was not addressed earlier, so I hope you have already taken your cats to the vet for decontamination & supportive care. There is really not very much information about this particular medication being consumed by a cat. It is basically progesterone, & we do know that higher doses can cause sedation, ataxia, anisocoria ( unequal pupils ) & disorientation. I found one documented source of a cat that consumed an unknown amount of progesterone, & all of the symptoms resolved over several hours with supportive care ( not identified, but probably included fluids & possible gastric decontamination with activated charcoal ). So if any of your cats are showing any of these signs, please have the cat examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If it has been several hours & everyone is looking & acting well, then you may still find the pill somewhere. But any concerns or doubts, please head out to your veterinarian. When antibiotics are ingested in toxic amounts, it can result in mild to severe signs ranging from gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, discolored teeth), metabolic signs (e.g., skin lesions, liver failure, kidney failure, etc.) to central nervous system signs (e.g., tremors, seizures, death). I would advise contacting your local emergency vet hospital or contact Poison Control https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control Sorry this happened with your pet. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Overdosing of antibiotics is usually not a huge deal. It can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea. I would monitor for these signs. I do recommend calling your local emergency clinic (or posting another question) including which antibiotic (Amoxyclav?, Doxycycline?, etc.), as this might change the answer and inducing vomiting might be recommended. I'm afraid this doesn't come up often enough for us to have much experience with it, so I would recommend calling the ASPCA poison control hotline - they have board-certified veterinary toxicologists on staff, as well as a database they can search for more detailed information on whether this is likely to be a problem, and what kind of treatment is needed. Their phone number is (888) 426-4435. Be aware that they have a $65 consultation charge, so you will need to have a credit card ready when you call.

Animals can show signs of toxicity after ingesting 1.5 mg per kilogram of body weight and Hunter may have ingested over 7 mg per kg. I would be concerned about the potential for serotonin syndrome secondary to this medication. It could cause agitation, high heart rate or blood pressure, muscle tremors or seizures. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian to discuss treatment. Attempting to induce vomiting might be recommended if he ate the pill recently, but it can be difficult to get cats to vomit. Otherwise the recommended treatment would probably be IV fluids and monitoring in the hospital.

It could potentially cause serious toxicity. Blackie should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. If the ingestion was less than 2 hours ago, vomiting can be induced via injection. Activated charcoal may be given after to further decrease absorption. Kidney function should be monitored to confirm no damage has been done.
