My cat ate chili sauce and is drooling. Should I call the vet?

It sounds as though the chili sauce caused a bit of an upset stomach for Holly. Since she is still active and eating/drinking normally, it is perfectly reasonable to wait another 24 hours before seeking veterinary attention. You can try offering her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken to try to settle her stomach over the next few days. However, if Holly stops eat and drinking, becomes lethargic, or experiences vomiting or more frequent diarrhea, she should be examined by a vet more urgently. I suggest taking your cat to your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. Excessive drooling in a cat can be a sign of a number of problems including (but not limited to) nausea, dental disease. Ingestion of a toxin, foreign object caught in the mouth, salivary gland disease, ulcers in the mouth, cancer of the mouth, neurological disorders, or eating something that tastes very bad. Excessive drooling is also a symptom of rabies. Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.

It could be that Mia is drooling because she is nauseous. If she does get into a back of spicy chips, that may have upset her stomach leading to the nausea and subsequent drooling. I would withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Hopefully that should help the drooling, but if the drooling doesn't stop, gets worse, or she develops other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, or lethargy, then I would take her into the vet. The drooling can be a sign of nausea in cats, but given that Rex hasn't had a change in activity, appetite, or anything else, I would keep an eye on him for now. It could be chewing on those plants has upset his stomach, and I would keep them out of reach. Try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he's still drooling in another 24 hours after being on this diet or anything else changes from the normal, then I would have him seen by a vet.

I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian just to be sure she does not have anything stuck in her mouth and that she does not appear to be choking. Is there any chance she ate something that she shouldn't have? When something tastes bitter to a cat they will try to spit it out and will drool excessively. So this is a possibility too. Flea spray can cause a reaction such as you're describing, especially if she ingests some of it, which cats will often do while grooming. Hopefully it's just a reaction to the taste of the spray, and will pass quickly. If it continues for more than a couple of hours, or if she becomes lethargy or unsteady, take her in to the vet immediately, as she could have a more serious reaction to the medication. Also, if the spray contains pyrethrin, have her seen immediately, as this is highly toxic to cats.
