My cat has an open wound. How can I prevent infection at home?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! If Stormy goes outside the lump was probably an abscess that ruptured. If he is older than it could be a ruptured tumor. I wouldn't suggest bandaging it, cats dislike bandages and it sounds like it is in a awkward location to bandage. I would use an E-collar to prevent licking. Warm compress the swelling and wound 2-3 times per day to promote drainage. Clean the wound twice daily with warm water and a mild soap. I would avoid salt because it likely stings. Then apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the open area twice daily. He really needs to area evaluated and if it is an abscess antibiotics prescribed. I would be sure to get him to the Vet this week. I hope this helps and I wish you and Stormy the best!

Hello. If you have or can purchase a skin antiseptic, one with either 2% chlorhexidine or 1% povidine iodine, then you can gently clean this 2 times daily. Antibiotics would hasten healing, & if the wound is not looking better by early next week, I would consider a veterinary visit. But by keeping this clean, it will heal, & yes, this has the look of a typical cat bite abscess, so he did get into an argument with another cat. Please trim the fur so you can keep an eye on the wound and so the fur doesn't get stuck in it. Clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. I can't tell from the photo but if there is dirt in it you can flush the area with warm water. I wouldn't put anything topical on it if Truffles is licking the area. Using a restraint collar will stop the licking and then you could apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it, not deep into the wound. Keeping the area open and draining for a few days will prevent an abscess, a puss pocket under the skin. If Truffles stops eating or the area is very red and painful then he will need a veterinary exam and antibiotics. These wounds are not usually sutured as that traps in the infection. I recommend clipping the area with an electric clipper gently, if you have one available and Toby allows. Keep the area clean, and you can apply silver sulfadiazene (SSD) ointment once a day to promote healing. You can also get Toby an E-collar or “cone” to prevent him from scratching/rubbing the area and causing further trauma. I hope this helps and that all is well with Toby!

Antibiotic ointment may not by enough to treat it and Collic possibly will need a course of antibiotic in form of tablets to get back to normal. I would recommend Collic to be checked over by your local vets to fully assess the wound and to recommend the best treatment option.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cats are miraculous healers. The leg could just be sore. I would worry about an abscess forming from the bite. Abscesses required opening them up and antibiotics. The only thing you can do is clean the wounds twice daily with warm water and a mild soap and warm compress the wounds after each cleaning for the next 3-5 days. I wish you the best!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). It may heal on its own, even though it will take few days. Disinfection may be done at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. If the wound will not heal/or at least improve in 5 days, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
