What cat probiotics are best with antibiotics and how to give?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sweetie. Prednisone and antibiotics can be given together. I do recommend separating the antibiotics and the probiotics by two hours though. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria. Probiotics are good bacteria for the gut. If given together, the antibiotics will inactivate the probiotics. The timing of the fish oil does not matter. Hi there. Any antibiotic will cause some transient changes in gut flora. In some patients, this may cause some symptoms of GI upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you're concerned, you can certainly give Bailey a probiotic such as Forti-Flora in his food each day while he's taking the doxycycline - this won't hurt anything, and might help to keep his intestinal bacteria from being disrupted as much.

My short answer is no. Cats are very small compared to humans and the dosing is completely different. This is not a safe approach. Plus, antibiotics should never be given without a prescription by a veterinarian, as inappropriate use can lead to bacterial resistance, which can cause more serious problems. The syrup you are giving is an antibiotic - not a probiotic. It may be making the diarrhea worse. The cat needs a general dewormer (like pyrantel pamoate) and an antiprotozoal (like sulfadimethoxine). Those are the two medications I would be giving. An antibiotic like Cefpodoxomine is not a treatment for diarrhea.

If the anti-diarrhea medication is measured with a syringe, you can give it directly into Monday's mouth - squirt it into his cheek while tilting his nose upwards (so gravity helps direct the medication into the back of his throat to be swallowed). Similarly, probiotics can be mixed in with a little water or broth, then drawn up and given orally via the syringe.

Aside from monitoring your cat for inappetance, vomiting and diarrhea as possible side effects from antibiotic treatment, there isn't anything else that you should be doing. Probiotics can be useful to maintain normal GI bacterial flora, but be sure to time the administration between doses of antibiotics or they will be ineffective. Many infections require a long course of antibiotics for resolution, so don't worry about the length of the treatment course. Continue monitoring your cat for inappetance and increased drinking and urination due to the elevated creatinine level.
