My cat is on 4-week antibiotics. What should I be watching for?

No, To me this sounds like your veterinarian is doing a good job. In order to take care of all hidden bacteria and depending on the type of bacteria, it is necessary to run a long course of antibiotics. Apparently the infection is a nasty one. So, trust your vet and finish the course of antibiotics for a chance that your kitty's kidney disease is curable as it is likely caused by the infection.

You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. That is awesome news! I am so glad your kitty is feeling better. Just remember to finish the antibiotics for the duration of time that your vet prescribed them to ensure he doesn’t rebound and get sick again. Also always give the antibiotics with food and report any adverse reactions (vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, lethargy, etc) to your vet rigth away if seen. I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

Many antibiotics cause gastrointestinal issues in cats so you will need to call your vet and let them know what is going on. Most likely they will have you stop one or both of the antibiotics and prescribe something different. I would also suggest that you put him on a pre/probiotic while he is taking antibiotics and then continue for at least one week after the antibiotics have been stopped. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I would expect for your vet to either prescribe or offer injectable antibiotics and anti-nausea medicine for a few days in a row. I love to use cerenia as the anti-nausea medicine as it is also a pain reliever. Your vet may choose this or something else and add in a different pain reliever if necessary. A lot of specialists don't believe antibiotics are necessary, but since a small percentage do get an infection in the pancreas, a lot of vets treat with antibiotics to cover their basis. Also you will want to make sure Coquine is staying hydrated. If he is well enough to be treated at home then your vet may want to have you come in daily for a few days to get some subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids to help keep him hydrated. If he simply has just pancreatitis and no other complicating factors then they usually improve quickly and do really well. I hope this helps!
