Is my 5-week-old kitten ready for dry food on its own for school?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 20 days old | 8.3 lbs

I rescued a 4-5 week old kitten about a week ago. He has started eating wet food usually mixed with kitten milk and i was wondering if i can give him dry food by itself for when i go to school, which starts in a few days. I cant give him wet food as i know its bad to leave it out for long, is he old enough for dry food on its own?? He cleans himself, is steady on his feet, has teeth and uses the litter box if that gives any clearer indication on his age.

Gerat question! Over the next few days before you start school, begins increasing the amount of dry food and decreasing the amount of kitten milk so he's eating the dry food only. He is only enough for dry food only, but he needs to be weaned onto it. I hope this helps!

How do I wean 6-week-old kittens before they go to new homes?

At 6 weeks they are old enough to be weaned. You can started with dry kitten food mixed with a little water and canned food to entice them. If they eat well, then you can decrease the amount of canned food and water until they are eating dry food. The mom will also help by letting them nurse less and less. Once they are eating a good meal 3-4 times a day, they do no need any milk from mom and go to a new home.

At 5 weeks Baby should be old enough to start eating some solid food. You can try mixing some canned kitten food with some kitten formula like KMR and putting it in a shallow dish. Great question! It should take about two weeks to transition them. Mix together the wet food and the dry food, and over the next two weeks, slowly increase the amount of dry food and decrease the amount of wet food until they are eating the dry food only. I hope this helps :-)

Why won't my 11-week kitten eat cat food, only formula/sweets?
