My kitten won't eat dry food. Should I only feed him wet food?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 1lb

Hi, my kitten loves to eat wet food but he's eating less of dry food. I put some water on his dry food and he likes it and eat a lot. But just in few days he won't eat again. I've tried to stop putting water on it but he still eating less of dry food. I'm giving the right amount of dry food so he cannot might get over feed. Is this mean I should offer him only wet food?

Some cats prefer one type of food over another. I would just leave dry food out for him to nibble on and then feed him small amounts of canned food twice a day. He has plenty of teeth that he should be able to chew small kibble. He will begin to eat more dry as he continues to get older and gets hungrier. I hope this helps!

Don't worry. They are still young to take to food. It is great to try but sometimes can take a week or 2 longer for them to fully understand and thrive solely on kitten food. sinxe they were not interested it is best to skip a day or two and try again then. They all learn at different rates so keep trying but give them a break for a few days if they are not interested

Bunny is so adorable! I would try mixing together his wet food and his dry food. That will get him to eat his dry food in addition to the wet food. You can also try soaking his dry food in tuna juice or gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth to tempt him to eat. I hope this helps!

Hi. Most likely, yes that could be all it is. I would try a few different brands of dry, and give each him time to really get hungry before you offer dry so that he will go to dry if he is hungry enough. Good luck.

The most important thing is to make she he eats, period. Cats cannot go more than a couple of days without eating or they are at risk of suffering liver damage. It is not necessary for a cat to exclusively eat dry or wet food, but wet food can actually be better for them as it is closest to the meat they would get if they were forced to hunt instead of us feeding them. Dry food contains carbohydrates as binders and to allow the food to be dehydrated into kibble, but cats don't have a requirement for carbohydrates. My 9-week-old kitten won't eat dry food. Is this normal or a concern?

Sounds like Diva might be living up to her name ;-) She might simply be a picky eater, some cats are picky eaters. I hope that she is at least eating wet food, and getting nutrition from there. If she isn't eating at all, then there may be something medically wrong, and she should see a vet. I can give you a few tips to maybe help with this problem. First, make sure the food is kitten specific. Kittens need more of certain nutrients to help them grow, and an adult food won't provide that. I would try mixing the wet food and the dry food. Make a 50:50 mixture, and as she eats that, slowly decrease the amount of wet food, and increase the amount of dry food. I would do this over the course of at least 2 weeks to get her more used to the dry food, and eventually, you should have her on dry food only. If that doesn't work, you can try wetting the dry food with a can of chicken broth, but make sure the chicken broth is unsalted. See if these tips work for getting Diva on a dry food, as dry food does help keep their teeth clean.

Thanks for using petocach! I'm sorry to hear your cat is having issues with food preferences. Unfortunately, he will need to eat kitten food in order to get the nutrients, vitamins and minerals he needs to grow. I would recommend trying a variety of wet kitten foods to see which he may like, and occasionally warming them in the microwave to help it smell more enticing. He should ideally be eating two meals of kitten food a day, which can be supplemented with small amounts of additional protein but kitten food should be the mainstay of his diet. Good luck!

Absolutely! Dry food only diets are perfectly fine for kittens, provided that you are offering a diet formulated for growth, like a kitten or all life stage diet. Oliver can be transitioned to an adult cat food when he is 1 year old. Any time you change the food, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together for 5-7 days.

It is quite alright if little Oliver does not eat dry food. Canned food has a higher protein and moisture content as well as less carbs than dry food. Cats do not "need" carbohydrates but do need a high protein diet, especially growing kittens. Feed a good quality canned food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. Read the ingredients and confirm there is named protein source of animal, not plant, origin. Avoid by-products and meat meals. Stay away from store or discount brands too, these typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers.

What can I feed my picky 4-month-old kitten besides dry food?

It is completely fine to feed you cat only dry food if that is all she likes. If you want to give her canned food as an occasional treat any brand should be fine. My cat prefers wet food. How can I get them to eat dry kibble?

This is a tricky situation. Some cats just have very strong preferences. You can try mixing the wet and dry and slowly fading out the wet over the course of 1-2 weeks. You can also try adding some hot water to the dry food and letting it sit for 10 minutes before offering it to Oliver (I will warn you that not many cats are fooled by this, but worth a try). Another idea is to experiment with different dry foods - he may just not like the one you have. Finally, you may have to wait for him to grow out of this. He's still very young. If none of the ideas above work, use coupons and big box stores to get wet food and keep trying with the dry every 2 weeks. Good luck!
