Is my 1-month-old kitten ready for solid food? How much and how often?

Hello. I have a kitten and her mom. The kitten is a month old, should only be fed with her mother’s milk or should we feed her some cat food? If so, how much (in grams) and how often? I think this one hasn’t vomited and looks quite healthy. Thank you

Kittens can be offered semi solid food (kitten mousse or softened kitten kibble) from 14days of age and will wean gradually then once food is available, most kittens will control their own food intake depending on how much milk is available from mother, feeding guidelines are appropriate once fully weaned and should be on the bag (they vary by brand, age and weight of kitten). Be sure to deworm her also as worms are passed through the mothers milk to kittens.

At one month of age, the kitten should still be nursing from her mother, and will be too young to be weaned. I would allow the kitten to continue nurse from her mother, and you can offer a bowl of kitten mush that will help her start to wean. This mush can be left out all the time, refreshing the food as needed. I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until he is eating the dry kitten food only.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In terms of food, she should be fed kitten formula until she is about 6-7 weeks old at which point she can be switched to a dry or canned diet. It is important to get her evaluated by a veterinarian to get her on a preventative care protocol to include vaccines and deworming when she turns 6-8 weeks old. She is beautiful! Have a great day!

Am I overfeeding my 4-week-old kitten transitioning to wet food?

At 4-5 weeks, kittens should be transitioning to solid foods, so it would be best to mix in the KMR with the wet food into a sort of slurry to help with the transition and make it easier to digest. You can also weigh Cleo with a food scale or other small scale to get her weight in ounces which can help you determine how big she is. Most kittens at this age will still needed to be fed several times a day. How much solid food should I feed my 5-week-old weaning kittens?

I would recommend that you start them on a balanced kitten food instead of the a/d. a/d tastes good and is high in fat, but it is not an appropriate diet for long-term use in healthy pets. The amount to feed would depend on the diet you choose - there will always be feeding guidelines on the pet food packaging. You can choose either wet kitten food or dry food, and it may help to mix some of the kitten milk replacer in with either food to make a mush. At such a young age, I would leave plenty of food out and let them free feed, making sure it stays as fresh as possible. It would be the right time to start introducing solid food gradually. Initially just mixing it with kitten milk, then over 4-5 days wean her off onto solids completely. She is too big to rely on milk only.
