Should I trim my parrot's wings to stop it flying around?

Clipping wings can be beneficial if you are letting your bird out a lot to help keep him from escaping or running into things. If you've never clipped his wings before, I highly recommend having a vet do it the first time so that they can show you in person where the wings need to be clipped, how short, and how often. From then on, you can begin to clip the wings on your own following those instructions as well as other tutorials. if you do clip the wing yourself, be sure to have items such as styptic powder on hand in case you accidentally clip too far and need to stop any bleeding.

I would absolutely recommend working on training inside, and get to a point where you feel your bird will reliably stay with you, before even considering venturing outside. Then, be prepared that going outside may be scary and overwhelming, and even well trained birds may panic and fly once introduced to a new potentially scary environment - so I would recommend trimming Caleb's wings before going outside with him.....and frankly, I would be very hesitant and careful about taking him outside at all, due to the risk of him flying off. Thanks for reaching out. The best method to try and prevent flying is to trim the flight feathers on both sides. The flight feathers are the outside 10 feathers on the wing called the "primaries". There are probably videos on youtube to show how. Some birds with clipped wings can still fly a little, especially if there is a breeze at their backs. You still must be aware of open window or doors, ceiling fans, etc. The down side of trimmed wings, it is less exercise for birds. Most bird owners just have to figure out which is best for their birds and situation. Good luck.

It is not required, but many people do find it helpful to clip the tips of the flight feathers (this is NOT cutting the wings themselves, but just the feather tips, and is painless for the bird). I would recommend continuing to keep the wings clipped to prevent him from escaping. It is important that when you get him out of his cage to interact with him that you make sure the area is secured with no open doors or windows. The more you get him out of the cage and interact with him the more used to it he will be and the less likely he will want to fly away. I would recommend having his wings trimmed every 1 to 2 months to prevent him from flying away.
