My 3-year-old parakeet never learned to fly. How can I teach him?

Have him perch on your finger, then gently place a thumb on his feet to hold him. Allow him to flap as he is being held on your hand. This may show him he doesn't have enough lift to takeoff. You can also hold him over the bed and allow him to gently fly/flutter down onto it a few times. This may also show him he can only fly downwards.

You can't do anything to make the feathers grow faster aside from providing good nutrition. The feathers that are cut never actually grow back, you have to wait until the moult and new feathers coming in to replace the cut ones. A birds moult different amounts, but usually a couple of times a year.

You can trim your bird's wings to prevent flying, however if you have never done so before it is best to have a professional do the first wing trim and teach you how to do it in order to avoid serious injury to your bird.

Thanks for reaching out about Ozzie. At sixteen years old, arthritis, metabolic diseases, muscle degeneration from malnutrition or other causes, can lead to inability to fly. A veterinary visit is necessary to assess his condition and recommend treatments. Providing heat support in the 85-90 degree F range might give some comfort but is not a cure. Good luck.

You are probably correct in that your bird has suffered some sort of wing injury. I would recommend taking her to be evaluated by your veterinarian and possibly having X-rays performed to see if any of her bones are fractured. I would also recommend that you trim her wings for now to keep her from flying and further injuring herself.
