My Indian ringneck flies too much. How can I prevent it from escaping?

I am sorry to hear that your bird tried to escape. The good news is that the wings were clipped so he was unable to fly away. I would recommend continuing to keep the wings clipped to prevent him from escaping. It is important that when you get him out of his cage to interact with him that you make sure the area is secured with no open doors or windows. The more you get him out of the cage and interact with him the more used to it he will be and the less likely he will want to fly away. I would recommend having his wings trimmed every 1 to 2 months to prevent him from flying away. It may also be beneficial to train him to come to you for a treat so that, in the event of an escape, he will be trained to come back to you instead of wander off. I hope this helps. Clipping the wings usually entails just trimming the tips off the flight feathers, which will still allow the bird to fly but not as far or as fast. I would absolutely recommend working on training inside, and get to a point where you feel your bird will reliably stay with you, before even considering venturing outside. Then, be prepared that going outside may be scary and overwhelming, and even well trained birds may panic and fly once introduced to a new potentially scary environment - so I would recommend trimming Caleb's wings before going outside with him.....and frankly, I would be very hesitant and careful about taking him outside at all, due to the risk of him flying off. You can trim your bird's wings to prevent flying, however if you have never done so before it is best to have a professional do the first wing trim and teach you how to do it in order to avoid serious injury to your bird.

Hello, The best way to accustom a bird to handling is with slow, steady movements, patience, and lots of positive reinforcement over times. The training of birds all revolves around comfort and security. Continue to train to step up on your finger for longer and longer periods of time. Observe your bird for when it tries to fly away and distract with treats or attention but then allow to step down, during your control. Clipping wings might aid in your training.

Have him perch on your finger, then gently place a thumb on his feet to hold him. Allow him to flap as he is being held on your hand. This may show him he doesn't have enough lift to takeoff. You can also hold him over the bed and allow him to gently fly/flutter down onto it a few times. This may also show him he can only fly downwards.

Thanks for reaching out about Muthu. Yes you can use small fingernail clippers to just take off the tips, or use a fingernail file/Emory board to dullen them. You might want to have Quick Stop of other nail coagulant available. Be aware there are other problems that can cause self-damage, and if suspected a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
