My budgie's beak is overgrown and peeling. Does it need a vet?

Unfortunately from your photos I can't tell very clearly what is going on with the beak. If the beaks are overgrowing or impeding the chicks' ability to eat or drink, then I would have a vet take a look and trim the beaks down so that they can grow back into a more normal shape. If there is a growth, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an issue such as an infection or underlying problem which should be treated by a vet. If the babies are otherwise healthy, eating, growing and there is no discharge, etc, then just keeping an eye on the beaks may be fine, but if they continue to grow oddly or become problemsome to your birds, having a vet look is always best.

In the future, I recommend getting a cuttlebone for her to use to keep her beak trimmed. You should also make sure that her diet is balanced - she should be eating a commercial diet formulated for budgies and occasional fruits and veggies as treats. Beak overgrowth can be caused by a number of things, and if the beak is continuing to have issues or strange coloration with it, it would be best to have it checked out by an avian vet in your area. Giving your bird access to cuttlebone or other items to wear down the beak with can also help prevent overgrowth, but ruling out any health problems first is best.

Poor Quiz. Nutritional deficiencies can cause issues with the feathers and beak, so if he's also having trouble eating, a vet visit wouldn't hurt to rule out any deficiencies or other issues that could be causing his problems. Making sure he's on a balanced diet can also help ensure he gets enough nutrition. Other snacks such as salad greens, apple slices, strawberries etc, are also easier for a budgie to eat and break down and can provide additional nutrition.

Poor Sky. I would recommend taking him to a vet for a proper beak trim so he can start eating normally. Typically over grown beaks are actually due to nutrition. I would recommend taking his diet with you to the vet to discuss how to change his food to prevent beak over growth and possibly take him for more routine trimmings. hope tha thelps

A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.

Some birds may need to have their beaks trimmed regularly, even if they have toys or objects to do so. It is a good idea to bring Stuart into your vet to have the beak trimmed and examined for any causes that could be worsening it. Your vet may also be able to show you how to trim back the beak on your own.
