My new bird was picked on. Is he okay or does he need a vet?

It's impossible to diagnose anything from a picture but I don't see anything obviously abnormal from your pictures. It's always a good idea to get a new pet exam done by an avian veterinarian when getting a new bird. At this point, she really needs to see a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can check what the extent of the injuries may be to try to get her to improve. Keep in mind that dog on bird attacks can result in a lot of trauma. Best of luck!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Luca is having this issue. Feather picking in birds is EXTREMELY difficult to determine the underlying cause in many cases. The first thing you have to do is rule out any underlying medical causes so you need to take her to an avian veterinarian for an exam and some testing. Your vet will also discuss the diet (improper diet can cause bad feather quality causing them to pick them out). If you can rule out an underlying medical condition then the issue is likely behavioral and your vet can help you with treatment which typically includes a combination of environmental enrichment and behavior modification medications. If you try to just keep "putting a band-aid" on the issue by avoiding the vet you are not going to get anywhere. If the problem is an underlying medical condition and that is not addressed, no matter what you do at home to "treat" her she will not get better. There is no quick fix for this problem. It is a spray hydrogel. If she doesn't like the spray sound you can apply the gel with your fingers or a cotton ball. If you believe that he could be injured in any way, I recommend having him evaluated by your nearest veterinarian. Bird's may hide their clinical signs, so subtle signs such as a wing droop or fluffed feathers may indicate underlying disease/injuries. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to evaluate for any orthopedic (boney) injuries, which may require the placement of a splint or bandage. If he continues to act normally (eating, drinking, passing normal feces/urates) and perching normally, he will likely be OK. I hope this is helpful!

It is good that you separated the bird being picked on. If he is actively bleeding, injured, or the sites of his wounds appear to be infected, then it is best to bring him to a vet and have him treated with antibiotics as needed. Until you can get to the vet, keeping him separate, cleaning any wounds of any debris or oozing, and preventing him from picking at the wounds can help some.

It sounds like he needs to be seen by a vet for treatment. The bite may have injured his neck/wing and/or he may have an infection secondary to the bite. A vet can take an xray to see if anything is fractured and prescribe an antibiotic, if needed to treat an infection. The fact that he is crawling around the cage and not eating is very concerning so please have a vet take a look at him as soon as possible. Also, keep him separated from the other bird so this doesn't happen again.
