My lorikeet's beak is chipping. How can I help it without a vet?

If the break is very small and isn't bothersome or painful, you may just want to leave it alone to eventually grow out and heal. Keeping the area clean, dry, and free of debris can help it to heal and prevent infection. If the beak is actively hanging open, the crack is very large, or it becomes painful or is impeding your bird's ability to eat or drink, it will need to be seen by a vet for repair and treatment as it can become infected or impede normal ability. Keeping your bird indoors until the beak starts to heal is best to avoid further injury while your bird is out and about (if he's not kept in a cage during the day.)

As far as preventing the long beak growth, that will depend on the underlying cause. With cases of liver damage, often the growth can be slowed with treatments for the liver, and with jaw arthritis, birds are often more comfortable and will keep their beak a more appropriate length when the pain is controlled. Both of these treatments would need to be started, and monitored, by your veterinarian. Please do not give Lila any human medications, as many of them can cause harm to our feathered friends. If you're seeing streaking on the outside of the beak, it could indicate a cracked beak from an injury or even poor nutrition/underlying illnesses. If it's impeding his ability to eat or the lesions are on the inside of his beak/mouth it is best to seek veterinary care to try and find the underlying cause and get treatment. As long as it is just a little overgrown and she can still eat well (can tell by having the brown or green part of the poop present as they can pretend to eat) there is not a rush to get into the vet. It will need to be clipped and shaped if it gets really long though. Sometimes this can happen if a bird is eating only seeds so try to see if Turtle can be convinced to eat a pelleted diet by pretending to eat it yourself often around her and some patience.
