My new budgie has a broken beak and is eating too much. Is this normal?

Provide food and water and minimize stress and handling once separated. I would recommend taking him to an avian veterinarian to assess the severity of the injury and determine what treatment may be needed. Beak cracking can be due to a number of things including injuries or even poor diet. If the beak is badly broken or cracked to the point is is bleeding, causing pain, or keeping Chikcy from eating, seeking veterinary care is best. Making sure he is on a balanced diet can also help ensure the beak stays healthy and grows well.

Poor Sky. I would recommend taking him to a vet for a proper beak trim so he can start eating normally. Typically over grown beaks are actually due to nutrition. I would recommend taking his diet with you to the vet to discuss how to change his food to prevent beak over growth and possibly take him for more routine trimmings. hope tha thelps

If you believe his beak is broken or cracked, I would seek veterinary attention for him. A cracked beak is like a broken tooth and as bone and nerve endings are connected to the beak, such injuries are painful. A cracked beak won't grow together, but will grow out over time. Amputated or torn off beaks, as well as fractured beaks, will not grow back, but can be repaired. Depending on the severity, your vet may use special, nontoxic glue and bandage a broken / cracked beak. DO NOT use glue at home, as most glues are toxic to birds. I hope this is helpful!

Hello, You're correct in that Rocky's beak is very abnormal appearing. I worry the crusting on the ceres (the part above the beak) could be due to mites, a nutritional deficiency, or a respiratory infection. The beak's lopsided appearance could be due to liver or nutritional disease. I recommend taking Rocky to his veterinarian. They can best guide you after a physical exam. I hope this is helpful. If the beak is intact and attached firmly to the head, there is likely no cause for concern. Some birds will click or grind their beaks when they are settling down for the night or if they are comfortable. You can monitor for decreased appetite, weight loss or lethargy. These symptoms would indicate illness or injury. An exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended if Ocke develops any of these symptoms.
