My parakeet is egg bound for 5 days. What home treatment can I try?

I think my parakeet is egg bound it's not possible for me to take her to the vet I need to have information on what to do to treat her hair at home it's going on five days since I've noticed that there was any symptoms

Thanks for reaching out about Lola. How do you know she is egg bound and not abdominal (coelomic) fluid? Is she has been egg bound for 5 days, that is serious and a veterinary visit is recommended ASAP. Try placing her cage in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes. Most egg binding could be associated with a calcium deficiency so offering dark greens is important. The environment should be warm, 80-85 F range, 24/7. If she does not lay by tomorrow morning, you should see a veterinarian.

While it's a little difficult to see from your pictures, if Misty is truly egg bound she needs veterinary care immediately, as this can be a life-threatening condition. This a common complication in egg-laying parakeets, and while we don't entirely know what causes it, factors such as advanced age, vitamin deficiency, stress, and reproductive tract infections can play a role.

Misty needs to be examined by your exotics veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. He or she may take an x-ray to confirm the diagnosis and may recommend fluids, antibiotics, and/or vitamin injections. He or she will also likely attempt various methods to try to remove the egg.

Please make sure Misty gets veterinary care as soon as possible to improve her chances for recovery.

Egg binding is usually considered a serious medical emergency that should be seen by a vet, but even if being treated can still sometimes lead to the bird passing away.

thanks for reaching out about Rudy and including a photo. She should be seen by a veterinarian today if she hasn't laid an egg. By the time the ova leaves the ovary, it usually takes around 48 hours for place all the layers not he egg (yolk, albumen, membranes and shell). The shell is placed on the last 8 hours and the timing is so the egg is laid early in the morning. She should have laid the egg before dawn. You can try placing her in the warm steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes to see if that helps to stimulate uteirne contractions and egg laying. If not she should really see a veterinarian today as there is a risk of the egg adhering to the uterine wall, and rising complications. Good luck.

There is nothing you can feed to induce egg laying. If Kiwi is presently egg bound, an exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be strongly recommended. If this is not possible, soak her in a warm bath for about 30 minutes deep enough to cover her vent. A dab of olive oil around the vent may facilitate passing of the egg.
