My finch was eaten from its cage. What predators attack outdoor birds?

It won't make your cat forget about them, thats for sure. However, a different cage may be more protective for the birds. Ideally, you might consider keeping the birds cage in a room that is closed off to the cat. This will keep the cat away from them entirely. The constant stalking that the cat may be doing to the birds could stress them out significantly and also may frustrate your cat. Sorry I don't have an easy solution for you here. Best of luck! Unfortunately changing a dog's prey drive is very difficult. Even the best of dogs still have instinct take over at times and there isn't much you can do other than make sure the bird and Ptolemy are monitored at all times. You can also find a local trainer and see if they have any advice but in my experience this is very hard to prevent. I'm sorry about your budgie. Without knowing the size of the cage, it is hard to give advice. If they have a large flight cage where they can easily move around and exercise, then that may be enough. Adding in some fun toys to explore, moving dishes and toys around or rotating them out, offering treats to chew on, etc can all help increase enrichment and make things more fun for your birds. If they're kept in very small cages, then looking for a playpen that can fit in the room or on top of the cage may be nice for your birds to climb on or play on. However, finches tend to explore more and may want to fly around, so it is best to make sure they are only let loose in rooms where they can easily be caught again and cannot fly into windows, doors, or other dangerous objects that can cause injury or death.

Insect bites/stings rarely cause wounds in cats (the exception being uncommon venomous spiders). Clean all the wounds with dilute iodine or hydrogen peroxide and keep them all indoors until they are fully healed. If any cat seems painful or has a wound that is hot to the touch, painful, or swollen, that cat needs to see the vet for a more thorough cleaning and probably antibiotics. Of course I also suggest that they remain indoor cats if possible to do so. Best of luck to you and the kitties!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would keep a lid on the fish tank and I would keep the birds in a separate room when you are not home. I would also keep the birds caged. You should be training the kitten to not jump on the bird cage and the fish tank. They make noise deterrents to scare a cat away from an area you do not want them to be. Be sure to provide plenty of outlets for Holly to play and be stimulated so she isn't bored and try to interact with the other animals. Good luck!

Yes, you are correct that Finnegan can get sick from rats and birds. Cats can get tapeworms and leptospirosis from eating rats, and can get salmonella from eating birds. It's not normal for a cat to vomit so frequently, so I would have him seen by a vet for a health check about that. Since he's allowed outside, it would be impossible to keep him from eating rats and birds unless you find a way to keep him confined to the yard. You can build a cat sanctuary where he can play and lounge outside, but it will keep him from hunting. Your other choice is to keep him indoors all the time. I hope this helps!
