My dog killed my bird. What precautions protect my remaining bird?

This is not likely a behavior that can be corrected but it can be managed with a lot of consistency and persistence. Sounds like Coop has a high prey drive which is instinct. Instinct is very difficult to overcome. Your best option is to try working with an in-home, professional dog trainer. Cookie should be okay after eating the birds, however keep a close eye on her over the next few days as the little bones could potentially cause an issue in the gut. Keep an eye for vomiting, diarrohea and dullness. If concerned go to the vet asap. The only way to prevent this happening again is to make sure the birds are secure from the dog. You won't be able to train the dog not to eat them.

It won't make your cat forget about them, thats for sure. However, a different cage may be more protective for the birds. Ideally, you might consider keeping the birds cage in a room that is closed off to the cat. This will keep the cat away from them entirely. Yes, it sounds like you would provide a safe and loving home for a bird. I like your plan to keep it separate to reduce stress on the bird. I am sorry to hear that your bird tried to escape. The good news is that the wings were clipped so he was unable to fly away. I would recommend continuing to keep the wings clipped to prevent him from escaping. It is important that when you get him out of his cage to interact with him that you make sure the area is secured with no open doors or windows. The more you get him out of the cage and interact with him the more used to it he will be and the less likely he will want to fly away. I would recommend having his wings trimmed every 1 to 2 months to prevent him from flying away. It may also be beneficial to train him to come to you for a treat so that, in the event of an escape, he will be trained to come back to you instead of wander off. I hope this helps. I think with the appropriate training they may learn to get along great so that you do not have to fear this any longer.
