My Indian Ringneck's sharp nails cause bleeding. Can I trim them?

It would be best to gradually trim back the nails if they are overgrown. You can find bird nail trimmers at a local pet store, or use human ones if you are careful. You will want to look for the quik, or pink blood supply in the nail, and not cut it as it is very painful and will bleed. Having styptic powder or something such as cornstarch on hand is useful to stop any bleeding. Filing the nails and making sure Miththu has the right size perches that are big enough for him to wrap his toes on, but not curl completely around it, can also help his feet feel more comfortable.

Young birds like this rarely have long nails but can be sharp. They become sharp quickly to provide traction. Training you bird to allow an emory board to blunt the tips is a great idea. A short 2-3 swipes on one toe each day will keep then short. All eight toes trimmed in about 1 week. For length, when the digit itself is on a flat surface, the nail should not lift the toe or rotate the toe to the side. good luck.

It sounds like Melvin damaged the quick, or the small blood vessel that goes down the center of the nail. This is initially painful, so Melvin may need to see a vet to get some parrot-friendly pain medication, especially if you notice that he is not placing the foot normally. If she isn't picking at it or holding the foot up all the time, it likely does not hurt her. The nail does look a bit long. You can use a nail clipper to clip the point off. Avoid the pink area (or quick). This is the blood supply and it will hurt and bleed if you clip into it. Wrap her gently in a wash cloth and expose her feet to clip the nails. She will scream and holler but you can do one foot at a time with a rest in between. Concrete perches can help promote healthy nails and feet.
