My duck was attacked by a dog. Are these neck lumps an infection?

The swelling may be due to trauma, infection, a bite or sting, tumor or allergic reaction. Ideally, Susie should be physically examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating domestic fowl. She may need antibiotics, pain medication, antihistamines or even lancing. Any treatment will depend on her diagnosis.For now, keep her warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the vet. Make sure she is able to eat and drink as well, even if you have to syringe feed her water and food.

Poor Duck! I would take him into the vet in the morning. I agree it looks like it could be infected, so he needs antibiotics to treat the infection. The vet can prescribe them as needed. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately it is difficult to give you as very specific answer. What I can say is that this kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Hello. I do not think you need to make a neck brace. It will probably just stress her out further. Just clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide & apply a triple antibiotic to the wounds. You may need to do this twice a day for a week or so. Watch out for flies around the wounds so you do not wind up with maggots in the wound. You can spray a little fly spray made for pets to help. If the neck was broken, Puddle would likely have passed away, or be in a lot of pain or distress. If she has a wound or injury on her neck, it would be best to move her to an isolated hospital cage and to treat and clean the wound so it doesn't get infected. This can help her heal without the rest of the flock picking on her and making it worse. Once she is recovered, you can reintroduce her. I would also recommend adding in some other ducks so she has friends to stay safe with. If she has been badly injured, can't move, or is in severe distress, it is best to seek emergency care from your vet or an ER clinic so she can be seen right away.

I am sorry to hear about Jake. Apply pressure to the area by firmly holding gauze or a towel over it for several minutes. You need to keep the puncture area clean by rinsing it with dilute soapy water and then apply hydrogen peroxide. You can also apply an over the counter antibiotic ointment like neosporin to the puncture wound. Most ducks that are attacked by dogs require antibiotics because the bite wound usually gets infected. You could take him to the vet and let them know the types of antibiotics used in ducks. Clavamox and Baytril are two that I often use and they come in an oral form.
