Rooster injured my duck's neck. How do I clean her neck wound?

Thanks for reaching out about your duck. Hydrogen peroxide kills cells indiscriminately, good and bad, and should be stopped. This duck might benefit from systemic antibiotics, since topical medications do not penetrate deeply. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, ASAP. This can provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. If the neck was broken, Puddle would likely have passed away, or be in a lot of pain or distress. If she has a wound or injury on her neck, it would be best to move her to an isolated hospital cage and to treat and clean the wound so it doesn't get infected. This can help her heal without the rest of the flock picking on her and making it worse. Once she is recovered, you can reintroduce her. I would also recommend adding in some other ducks so she has friends to stay safe with. If she has been badly injured, can't move, or is in severe distress, it is best to seek emergency care from your vet or an ER clinic so she can be seen right away.

Hello. So much depends on where the wound is, how deep it is & how easy it is to handle the bird. Some wounds will heal very nicely on their own & it is surprising how quickly they can heal. I have treated & sewn up some of my own hens that survived raccoon attacks, some survive & others that appear less severely injured died. If the bird will allow you to clean the wound, use a skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). Then, depending on how bad the wound is, you can use a triple antibiotic or even a wound spray like Catron which will also keep the flies off. All you can do is try, especially if there are no veterinarians in your area that will see birds ( call around, you might be surprised to find a vet that likes chickens ). I am sorry to hear about Jake. Apply pressure to the area by firmly holding gauze or a towel over it for several minutes. You need to keep the puncture area clean by rinsing it with dilute soapy water and then apply hydrogen peroxide. You can also apply an over the counter antibiotic ointment like neosporin to the puncture wound. Most ducks that are attacked by dogs require antibiotics because the bite wound usually gets infected. You could take him to the vet and let them know the types of antibiotics used in ducks. Clavamox and Baytril are two that I often use and they come in an oral form. If the bleeding won't stop, then may need sutures. Hopefully you can find a vet that will work with you. Try calling your local animal shelter or wild life rehabilitation center if you have one. Just hold pressure for a few minutes using a clean cloth or gauze. you may have to hold him for a bit to prevent him from shaking his head in order to give the wound time to clot. If a deep wound or you can't stop the bleeding then veterinary attention may be needed. Depending on how open the wound is, you may need to keep the chicken indoors to prevent fly strike and maggots. These could be abscesses due to the dog bites, birds must have antibiotics after being attacked by other animals otherwise wounds almost always get infected, you will need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

Keep it clean and dry. You can dab it with diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) daily. If it doesn't begin to heal in a few days or is actively bleeding, see your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or loose droppings. These are also symptoms that should be addressed by your vet.
