How to keep my conure warm in winter? Is bathing safe in cold weather?

I was wondering what are some ways to keep a Conure warm in the winter? I have some tents in my birds cage and recently found out to keep the heat in my house 68 degrees and up. I also use a cage cover at night. Is there anything else I should be doing? He loves to use the kitchen faucet to bathe as well and sometimes gets himself pretty wet. Is that ok if he continues to do that during the winter? He loves to bathe.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. It is fine to allow bathing as long as warm enough to dry off. There are heat lamps available to provide heat support, available at most pet stores. Tropical birds have difficulty stay ing warm in colder weather, as required lots of energy. Covering the cage or providing a tent is not adequate for cold weather. A conure's body will not heat the air in the cover cage to trap heat.

Paper or bottom substrate should be changed daily to assist with monitoring. If continued to be concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended, which is a good idea annually anyways. Check environmental temperature lows in the evening. Review and correct diet as it is easier to convert off seed while young than older. Good luck.

The best way to keep the parrot warm would be to make sure the room it lives in is always heated. You could get a thermostat for the room so that it always stay at a constant temperature. Covering the cage with a heavy blanket also helps to insulate it at night.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Wings need to be trimmed to provide safety. If Rico is allowed to fly around the house, can still get into trouble. Trimming wings do not correlate with health or illness, except in reduced exercise. Good luck.

My canary won't bathe. Is he sick, or is the room too cold for him?

If Ringo is otherwise acting normal and healthy, I wouldn't be too worried about the bathing, as it could very well be its too cold for him. You can try offering some warm water to see if he shows interest, or even using a spray bottle on a mist setting to see if he's interested in "showering" under it. If he seems to be acting ill in addition to this, or is having other changes in behavior, eating habits, etc, then it is always a good idea to schedule a vet checkup and rule out any health issues as a cause.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Try training to approach the cage, giving a reward, and setting down near the cage. Then go another step, work it slowly. Its all works around trust. Birds are generally grumpy during molting, so attitude might change when molting complete. Good luck.
