Why is my conure sleeping on the cage floor, not in his bed?

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | 7 months and 5 days old

I have a 7 month old Black Capped Conure. I recently noticed the past couple times he has been sleeping at the bottom of his cage. He did that when I first got him but then we got him a bed. He has always slept in that bed since we got it. Should I be concerned? To me I think he’s acting ok otherwise.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Is he possibly getting cold? Monitor appetite and water consumption by the amount of feces and urine in the cage, daily. Paper or bottom substrate should be changed daily to assist with monitoring. If continued to be concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended, which is a good idea annually anyways. Check environmental temperature lows in the evening. Review and correct diet as it is easier to convert off seed while young than older.

Tropical birds have difficulty stay ing warm in colder weather, as required lots of energy. Covering the cage or providing a tent is not adequate for cold weather. A conure's body will not heat the air in the cover cage to trap heat. Good luck.

How cold is too cold for a young conure in my 65-degree home?

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Temperatures in the low 60s is too low for tropical species and supplemental heat needs to be provided, as their comfort zone is probably in the 80s. A full spectrum bulb with heat emitters, ceramic or infrared bulbs can be used. Young birds are even more susceptible to cold weather as are generally thinner and lack behaviors to increase insulation. Good luck.

My new cockatiel is staying on the floor. Is it a sign of illness?

Is Rio still eating but just quieter? The best way to monitor this is not by looking a the food level, as they can scatter it around, but to quantitate the amount of feces produced. Clean the cage daily, same time every day, count number of fecal droppings. Slowing down and eating less might be an indication of being ill, and if concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended. Providing supplemental heat at 80-85 degrees might help support the immune system. Good luck.

Why is my cockatiel sleeping at the bottom of his cage and inactive?

Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range for aid. A veterinary visit to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan is recommended. Respiratory infections (bacterial, fungal) are common, as is aspiration. Vitamin A deficiencies can play a part also. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid. Good luck.
