Should I clip my bird's wings in winter or wait until spring?

Young birds like this rarely have long nails but can be sharp. They become sharp quickly to provide traction. Training you bird to allow an emory board to blunt the tips is a great idea. A short 2-3 swipes on one toe each day will keep then short. All eight toes trimmed in about 1 week. For length, when the digit itself is on a flat surface, the nail should not lift the toe or rotate the toe to the side. good luck.

You don't "need" to get them clipped. The feathers do not grow back, rather they are replaced after a molt. If you choose to have him evaluated by your veterinarian, simply warm up the car and then cover the cage when you go from pace to place. He should be fine to travel this way.

Tropical birds have difficulty stay ing warm in colder weather, as required lots of energy. Covering the cage or providing a tent is not adequate for cold weather. A conure's body will not heat the air in the cover cage to trap heat. Good luck.

Monitor the color of the feathers as they can dull due to dietary deficiencies (not enough vegetables or protein) or excessive petting. Clipping the wings usually entails just trimming the tips off the flight feathers, which will still allow the bird to fly but not as far or as fast. I would absolutely recommend working on training inside, and get to a point where you feel your bird will reliably stay with you, before even considering venturing outside. Then, be prepared that going outside may be scary and overwhelming, and even well trained birds may panic and fly once introduced to a new potentially scary environment - so I would recommend trimming Caleb's wings before going outside with him.....and frankly, I would be very hesitant and careful about taking him outside at all, due to the risk of him flying off. I think clipping the wings would be a great idea. That way you can get Nero our more and feel comfortable that he won’t fly away. Once clipped the wings will grow back so if you decide later you want him to be flighted, he will be able to.

Clipping wings can be beneficial if you are letting your bird out a lot to help keep him from escaping or running into things. If you've never clipped his wings before, I highly recommend having a vet do it the first time so that they can show you in person where the wings need to be clipped, how short, and how often. From then on, you can begin to clip the wings on your own following those instructions as well as other tutorials. if you do clip the wing yourself, be sure to have items such as styptic powder on hand in case you accidentally clip too far and need to stop any bleeding.
