My parrot feels cold. How can I keep my bird warm in winter?

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. It is fine to allow bathing as long as warm enough to dry off. There are heat lamps available to provide heat support, available at most pet stores. Tropical birds have difficulty stay ing warm in colder weather, as required lots of energy. Covering the cage or providing a tent is not adequate for cold weather. A conure's body will not heat the air in the cover cage to trap heat. Good luck.

A full spectrum bulb with heat emitters, ceramic or infrared bulbs can be used. Young birds are even more susceptible to cold weather as are generally thinner and lack behaviors to increase insulation. Good luck.

If she is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. Birds will fluff up their feathers to trap air between them. this acts as insulation to retain body heat. Check the room temp and increase it if necessary. Use a cage cover at night and check for strong or cold drafts around her cage. If she is lethargic, not eating and has loose droppings then she should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.

Thanks for reaching out. Antibiotics in the water are never a proper treatment, as you have no control over dosage. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give aid. You need to find a veterinarian with avian experience, try the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV.org) as they have a find-a-vet area. They probably did not die from getting cold, but probably didn't help. They need to be seen ASAP and given systemic antibiotics and dosed appropriately. If not eating, need to be syringe fed as young birds have no energy reserves. See a veterinarian ASAP. Good luck.

Sky might be feeling a bit cold or nervous from the change to a new home. Making sure his cage is kept in an area that is free of drafts and not too warm or cold can help, as well as making sure it's not in an area that is super busy or noisy. Give him a few days to settle down in his new home- you can observe and offer him some treats in the cage itself, but waiting a bit to handle him until he's had a change to settle in may help.

It's possible the baby got a bit chilled from being wet. Making sure he is in a cage that is kept warm, and adding in a heat lamp as needed to help him dry off and warm up may help, as well as making sure he is still eating and drinking. If he continues to weaken, is showing other signs of illness, or isn't improving, seeking veterinary care in person ASAP is best as once birds are showing signs of illness, it is typically serious enough to require care in person.
