My hand-fed conure chick won't eat, has green poop. What to do?

Bird droppings normally contain some green as well as white and some liquid. If you feed mainly seeds, the droppings will be mostly green. A pelleted diet will make droppings darker. Some feather loss is normal as she matures. Her first molt may be around 8 months of age. Symptoms of illness that warrant an exam with your veterinarian include lethargy, decreased appetite, loose droppings, perched with feathers fluffed, vomiting or excessive regurgitation.

One mild concern would be a condition call chlamydophilosis, which can also be communicable to other birds and people. Veterinarians can sometimes have access to injectable doxycycline, since won't take orally. Gavage feeding the medications and food could also be beneficial and a veterinarian can assist with the technique. Without examining your bird in person, or knowing any other symptoms beside "loose stool" it would be impossible to tell what is going on with Kiwi. If she is listless and doesn't seem to be doing well, or has an infection, speaking with the vet that examined her and prescribed the antibiotic syrup is best as they will best know her case history. Keeping her warm, in a clean cage, and with easy access to food and water can help. Making sure she is eating a balanced diet and not just sunflower seeds (which are very fatty and could be causing the diarrhea) can also help to get her feeling better. If the medication isn't helping or she isn't feeling better, seeking another appointment in person is best.

Thanks for reaching out about Diablo and including photos. Green stool can be normal depending on recent food ingested. The picture shows a well formed feces, appropriate amount of urine/urates. If Diablo is preferentially eating the green pellets, the feces can be more green. Fat should be kept minimal, and with the 10% fat in the pellets and seed, the seed should be limited if not eliminated. Parrots are not exposed to many seeds in the wild, but nuts yes. A wide variety of vegetables are important, as is a protein source such as beans or legumes. Good luck.

The biggest way to keep your bird healthy is to feed the appropriate diet. I strongly suggest Lafeber diets. The color of the droppings can vary depending on the diet. If Keke is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. Continue to monitor the stool and diet. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or develops loose droppings, then have him examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian.
