Why is my young cockatiel's beak dark and nostril skin peeling?

Ideally, Doodlee should be examined by your veterinarian or an avian veterinarian. A physical exam will be required to assess any beak injury and to administer treatment if indicated. Monitor him for lethargy, loss of appetite or difficulty eating. Consider separating the birds until Doodlee is examined and healed. Do not attempt to clean it unless directed by your vet.

Discolored beaks and dull plumage can be an indication of illness, whether an infection or due to sub-standard nutrition. If you haven't seen a veterinary after acquisition, that would be a good idea. Also discuss with the vet the proper nutrition for birds, as seed is not an all inclusive nutritional palette. The other possibility is self trauma due to a sinus infection which could be bacterial or fungal. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Not sure what you are referring to by "something up her nose", but they do have a piece of flesh called the operculum, within the nare. Exposure to a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes could moisturize the sinus passages. Good luck.

This appears to be a contusion on the tissue close to the vent (but not) that happens when cockatiels jump/fall, wings are over trimmed and they hit the ground hard. The tail becomes hyper-extended dorsally, ripping the skin. The wound needs to be cleaned, and systemic antibiotics can assist with infection prevention. A veterinary visit is recommended. Lower perches to 3-6 inches above the bottom of the cage, place a soft towel to lighten falling. Good luck.

If the bleeding has stopped, I would keep an eye on him and If he has any trouble breathing, there is a large visible wound or crack on the beak, or he isn't eating or drinking, then I would seek veterinary care ASAP as these are all signs that the issue is more serious and requires treatment by a veterinarian.

Sometimes, respiratory illness or fungal infections can cause growths or blocked nasal passageways in birds. If you can keep the area clear with a clean washcloth, that's best, however if there area is bothersome, can't be flushed out easily, or is changing in appearance, it would be best to have Luna looked at by a vet. They can safely flush out any debris in the nose and get her started on medication to treat any bacterial or fungal infection present.
