Should I clip my untamed bird's wings for easier training?

It is not required, but many people do find it helpful to clip the tips of the flight feathers (this is NOT cutting the wings themselves, but just the feather tips, and is painless for the bird). I am sorry to hear that your bird tried to escape. The good news is that the wings were clipped so he was unable to fly away. I would recommend continuing to keep the wings clipped to prevent him from escaping. It is important that when you get him out of his cage to interact with him that you make sure the area is secured with no open doors or windows. The more you get him out of the cage and interact with him the more used to it he will be and the less likely he will want to fly away. I would recommend having his wings trimmed every 1 to 2 months to prevent him from flying away. It may also be beneficial to train him to come to you for a treat so that, in the event of an escape, he will be trained to come back to you instead of wander off. I hope this helps. Clipping wings can be beneficial if you are letting your bird out a lot to help keep him from escaping or running into things. If you've never clipped his wings before, I highly recommend having a vet do it the first time so that they can show you in person where the wings need to be clipped, how short, and how often. From then on, you can begin to clip the wings on your own following those instructions as well as other tutorials. if you do clip the wing yourself, be sure to have items such as styptic powder on hand in case you accidentally clip too far and need to stop any bleeding.

If nails growing long rapidly, this could be an indication of a liver disease, so a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. You can trim your bird's wings to prevent flying, however if you have never done so before it is best to have a professional do the first wing trim and teach you how to do it in order to avoid serious injury to your bird.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico. Wings need to be trimmed to provide safety. If Rico is allowed to fly around the house, can still get into trouble. Trimming wings do not correlate with health or illness, except in reduced exercise. Good luck.
