My chicken or rooster has a head wound. How to stop bleeding?

Hello. So much depends on where the wound is, how deep it is & how easy it is to handle the bird. Some wounds will heal very nicely on their own & it is surprising how quickly they can heal. I have treated & sewn up some of my own hens that survived raccoon attacks, some survive & others that appear less severely injured died. If the bird will allow you to clean the wound, use a skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). Then, depending on how bad the wound is, you can use a triple antibiotic or even a wound spray like Catron which will also keep the flies off. All you can do is try, especially if there are no veterinarians in your area that will see birds ( call around, you might be surprised to find a vet that likes chickens ). Keep it clean and dry. You can dab it with diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) daily. If it doesn't begin to heal in a few days or is actively bleeding, see your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or loose droppings. These are also symptoms that should be addressed by your vet.

I am sorry to hear about Jake. Apply pressure to the area by firmly holding gauze or a towel over it for several minutes. You need to keep the puncture area clean by rinsing it with dilute soapy water and then apply hydrogen peroxide. You can also apply an over the counter antibiotic ointment like neosporin to the puncture wound. Most ducks that are attacked by dogs require antibiotics because the bite wound usually gets infected. You could take him to the vet and let them know the types of antibiotics used in ducks. Clavamox and Baytril are two that I often use and they come in an oral form. If the bleeding won't stop, then may need sutures. Hopefully you can find a vet that will work with you. Try calling your local animal shelter or wild life rehabilitation center if you have one. Hello. I do not think you need to make a neck brace. It will probably just stress her out further. Just clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide & apply a triple antibiotic to the wounds. You may need to do this twice a day for a week or so. Watch out for flies around the wounds so you do not wind up with maggots in the wound. You can spray a little fly spray made for pets to help. This could be due to a trauma or possibly to a infection (respiratory or oral infection). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. There is really not anything you can give a chicken for pain that is over the counter. Even if there was, you would never be able to get a dosage small enough for a 3 month old chicken. You will have to take her to a vet if you think she is pain and needs medication. They are tough so as long as she is eating and drinking and active I would not be overly worried about pain. Just continue to keep the wounds clean as you have been doing. Hope this helps.

Apply direct but gentle pressure to the wound with clean gauze or a clean washcloth. Have Alec examined at the nearest veterinary ER for further treatment and supportive care. The doctors there should be able to stabilize and treat him until your avian vet is available.
