My budgie flies crooked and crashes. What's wrong with her wings?

If you believe that he could be injured in any way, I recommend having him evaluated by your nearest veterinarian. Bird's may hide their clinical signs, so subtle signs such as a wing droop or fluffed feathers may indicate underlying disease/injuries. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to evaluate for any orthopedic (boney) injuries, which may require the placement of a splint or bandage. If he continues to act normally (eating, drinking, passing normal feces/urates) and perching normally, he will likely be OK. I hope this is helpful!

This is usually a sign of a wing injury, if he can still fly then the wing is not broken. if the problem does not resolve within a week i would recommend taking him to an avian vet specialist in order to get it checked and treated.

Hello! If your female bird is trying to escape your male bird, I would recommend keeping them separated. Frustrated and scared birds often hurt themselves attempting to escape situations. When a bird holds up their leg, it is the equivalent of a human limping and is a sign of pain. I would recommend taking her into be seen by an avian vet. They will likely recommend x-rays. The x-rays will ensure that she has no broken bones, as well as looking at her abdominal organs. Abdominal problems are a common cause of leg issues in birds because their abdominal organs are on top of their sciatic (leg) nerve. They will likely recommend an anti-inflammatory to help with her pain and make other treatment recommendations based off of x-rays and physical exam. I hope this helps! Hi, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, The signs you are describing are neurological and could result from many different etiologies, trauma being just one of them. It is, therefore, recommended that your parakeet be examined by a vet. If no other cause is detected and trauma remains the main suspicion, at this late stage, 3 weeks after the initiation of the symptoms, treatment options are limited. Some cases will improve with time, while in others the damage may be irreversible.

If she is ill or injured, she should not travel. Have her examined by an experienced avian veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury. Treat as indicated. Ask a friend or family member to "baby sit" her while you are away.

If he is continually bleeding, then it's best to get him to a vet as soon as possible, because they can't afford to lose too much blood. If the bleeding has stopped and he is eating/drinking OK, then you can wait for 24 hours and see if there is any improvement with how he holds his wing. Sometimes they initially will hold it like this and it will shake due to the pain and not a fracture. If it doesn't seem better after a day, then I would get it checked out by a veterinarian to see if there is any serious damage. I hope that helps and Rainbow gets better soon.

We worry that when birds are having trouble flying that they may not be feeling well or that they have pain somewhere. To add to this, it is worrisome that she is letting you handle her since this is not normal for Spartan. At your veterinarian's office, they can perform a thorough examination and they may recommend performing diagnostic testing depending on what they find on exam. This may include performing radiographs (x-rays) or systemic blood work. Then they can make recommendations for treatments based on their findings as well.
