My budgie's wing is bleeding and shaking. Should I take her to a vet?

It's hard to see anything wrong from just photos however if you do have a video you can add in a YouTube link to your question for us to see. If Joy is holding the wing out funny, doesn't want to use it, or seems painful when doing so, it could indicate something such as an injury which should be checked out. Sometimes stress or activity can also increase breathing which may look like the wings shaking as birds expand and contract their entire chest-cavity to breathe. If she is otherwise normal and healthy and the wing is being used/isn't bothersome to her, I wouldn't be worried, but if she seems to have any problems breathing, the wing seems injured or painful, she seems listless, doesn't want to eat or drink, or shows any other signs of illness, having it looked at in person is always best.

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy and including photos. This is evident of trauma, could this bird be getting scared in the cage and flying/hitting the cage bars? I would not worry about it unless the bleeding persists. It could have been a mild injury or trauma to a feather follicle. As long as he is acting normally I would just monitor it. If it continues to bleed or looks worse at any time then get him to your vet for an exam.

It is possible Houdini broke a blood feather or injured himself causing bleeding. You will need to gently look under his wing. You can pluck a broken blood feather if you have done it before, otherwise leave it for your vet or a vet experienced in treating birds. Make an appointment to have Houdini examined. You can bring the water additive with you to discuss its use with your vet.

If the skin is broken and bleeding, Lemon Drop is at risk for infection. Even if you have no local avian veterinarian, a small animal vet should be able to treat her. A specialist can be consulted online or by phone. The antibiotics and medications used are similar, just the dose is much smaller. A small e-collar (cone) may need to be fashioned to prevent her from plucking. In the meantime, lean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the cage bottom and change them daily to keep the cage clean. Provide a variety of toys and treats to keep her distracted from picking. Bathe or mist her with warm water a few times a week to promote preening and healthy skin and plumage.

I'm sorry your birds got into a spat. First, if you haven't already, make sure they are separated. If Twitter is not using the leg, I would recommend that he be seen by an avian veterinarian. The leg could be fractured, or have extensive soft tissue injury. Since you saw blood, we know there is an open wound, and infection may be a possibility. At a minimum Twitter may need a prescription for pain medication. Keep Twitter in a warm, quiet low stress area until you can get him seen. Make sure that he is eating and drinking normally.
