My budgie has a chest injury. Is it safe for her to fly or travel?

Ideally, she should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. If she is in with other birds, remove them to a different cage in case the injury was due to aggression. Check the cage for anything on which she could have injured herself. Monitor for lethargy, loose droppings or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that need to be addressed by a veterinarian.

You are probably correct in that your bird has suffered some sort of wing injury. I would recommend taking her to be evaluated by your veterinarian and possibly having X-rays performed to see if any of her bones are fractured. I would also recommend that you trim her wings for now to keep her from flying and further injuring herself.

If you believe that he could be injured in any way, I recommend having him evaluated by your nearest veterinarian. Bird's may hide their clinical signs, so subtle signs such as a wing droop or fluffed feathers may indicate underlying disease/injuries. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to evaluate for any orthopedic (boney) injuries, which may require the placement of a splint or bandage. If he continues to act normally (eating, drinking, passing normal feces/urates) and perching normally, he will likely be OK. I hope this is helpful!

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

We worry that when birds are having trouble flying that they may not be feeling well or that they have pain somewhere. To add to this, it is worrisome that she is letting you handle her since this is not normal for Spartan. At your veterinarian's office, they can perform a thorough examination and they may recommend performing diagnostic testing depending on what they find on exam. This may include performing radiographs (x-rays) or systemic blood work. Then they can make recommendations for treatments based on their findings as well. He have a respiratory infection, air sac mites or other condition. Jeff should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible to diagnose and treat the underlying cause. He may be very sick. Birds are very good at hiding illness or injury until it is quite serious. Try to impress upon your brother the seriousness of the situation and also that he may be putting his pet's life at risk by not seeking veterinary attention.
