My parrotlet has a scarred beak and clicks. Is it a health concern?

I have not heard of birds clicking their tongues when they are sick. Birds are more likely to show other symptoms when sick like: fluffing up their feathers, staying at the bottom of the cage, shaking, sleeping a lot, not eating or drinking normally, abnormal stools, etc. I would not worry about tongue clicking as a sign of illness. It appears that there is a malformation of your bird’s beak. This could be a congenital malformation or due to some type of injury or trauma. If your bird is still eating and drinking normally I would not be too concerned about it. What you are describing sounds like a normal behavior they occasionally have when eating and drinking. They also do a similar thing when they are happy, so maybe he does it for a certain food he likes. I would not be too worried as long as Sky is otherwise acting normal.

If you're seeing white lesions in his mouth or on the inside of his beak it could indicate an issue such as a bacterial or yeast infection that has taken hold. If you're seeing streaking on the outside of the beak, it could indicate a cracked beak from an injury or even poor nutrition/underlying illnesses. If it's impeding his ability to eat or the lesions are on the inside of his beak/mouth it is best to seek veterinary care to try and find the underlying cause and get treatment. Making sure Kiko is on a diet that is formulated for parrots can also ensure he's getting the right nutrients. You can offer fruits and vegetables as extras, but a balanced diet is needed for optimal health.

A little uneveness isn't much cause for concern, as birds will naturally file down their beaks on surfaces such as perches or cuttlebones, etc. However if the beak is very badly aligned, or keeps overgrowing, having it checked out by a vet is a good idea to make sure there isn't an illness, injury or even nutrient deficiency causing it. In the case of chronic beak misalignment, regular filing or trimming may be needed to help keep the beak in shape.

Birds can sometimes rub their beaks on stuff to relax/play with things, to wipe after eating, or just if they are interested or excited. By itself it doesn't really mean much. If Luna is showing signs of illness in addition to this, such as listless behavior, sleeping a lot, not wanting to eat or drink, or she seems disoriented, unable to perch, etc, then seeking a vet visit in person is always best.

Beak cracking can be due to a number of things including injuries or even poor diet. If the beak is badly broken or cracked to the point is is bleeding, causing pain, or keeping Chikcy from eating, seeking veterinary care is best. Making sure he is on a balanced diet can also help ensure the beak stays healthy and grows well.
