Why is my bird throwing up & having loose poop after chewing toys?

If Kaki is actively vomiting up the food (not just regurgitating) or is showing other signs of illness such as changes in weight (losing weight), disinterest in eating, etc, I would try to get him into the vet sooner as this could be a sign of something more serious that requires additional treatment. If he seems to be maintaining his weight and isn't bothered by bringing up the food, you may be able to wait until his vet exam, however if his symptoms worsen or he shows other signs of illness seeking care sooner is best. Rapid changes to the diet and lots of extras can cause GI upset and changes to the stool, and if he wasn't being fed such a rich diet previously his body may be still trying to adjust to it all. Sticking to the basics he is able to keep down (such as the pellets) may help his body to adjust until his vet visit. Ruling out other issues such as infections, sour crop, parasites, etc with your vet is also smart.

Submit a sample to your veterinarian to diagnose parasites or bacterial/fungal overgrowth. Discontinue feeding fruits and vegetables until the stool is normal, then introduce one at a time slowly. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the cage bottom and change them daily until his droppings are normal. Provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible. If he develops lethargy, loss of appetite or if the droppings don't begin to firm up in the next 24 hours, have him examined by your vet or an experienced avian vet.

Unfortunately, those are symptoms that need to be seen in person by a vet, because they are not possible to diagnose over the internet. If multiple of your birds are having loose stools and are housed together, I would be concerned there is something going on such as a contagious illness, parasites, nutritional issue, or unclean environment. Treating for parasites and making sure all birds have access to fresh food and water and a clean environment may help. Separating out any sick birds until they recover may also help. If the problem continues, your bird(s) worsen, or they do not improve with home treatment, then you will need to find a vet in your area that can take a look at them and determine the problem.

Looser stools could be caused by a number of things including a sudden change in diet, too many treats or snacks, or an underlying issue such as GI upset or parasites. If the change was recent and you changed Carl's food or gave him a new treat or snack, removing all extras and giving him a day or two to get used to the new food may help. If the loose stools continue, or nothing has changed for him diet-wise, a checkup with your vet along with bringing in a fecal sample can help rule out any illness or issues causing it.

Thanks for reaching out. No, this is not normal. Ingested toxicities, gastrointestinal foreign bodies, crop infections, are all possibilities. A veterinary visit is recommended for diagnosis and treatment. If he has been and continues to regurgitate, he probably is not getting many nutrients. See a veterinarian tomorrow if possible. Vomiting and nasal discharge in birds can be a sign of bacterial or fungal infections, toxin ingestion, as well as damage to the crop (the area that stores food in the esophagus). I recommend having your bird seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine the underlying cause, provide stabilization and treatment as necessary.

Unfortunately, those are very vague symptoms of illness that can be caused by a great number of things including GI upset, nutritional issues, parasites, illness, etc. You can try a few things at home first to see if it helps Ria improve. If you are feeding her many extras such as fruits and veggies, these can sometimes cause loose stool. Removing these extras and feeding only her regular balanced diet for a few days may help this clear up. If the problem continues, she may need to see a vet (if you don't have a bird-specific vet, a regular one may still see her) to check for parasites or other more serious issues which will need to be treated. If she is very ill, moving her to a hospital cage away from other birds to prevent the spread of illness and being picked on, and providing her easy access to food and water may help until you can get vet care.
