Why is my cockatiel shaking, frothing, biting cage, and loose poop?

Unfortunately, the symptoms you described are very vague signs of illness, so it would be hard to say what is going on without an exam in person. It's good that you're keeping her separated, and I would do so by keeping her in a warm hospital cage to see if that helps her improve. It's possible the diarrhea could be due to a diet change and the stress of coming to a new home, so giving her a day or two to see if she improves may help. Checking for parasites, and making sure she's on a balanced diet (removing any snacks or fruits and veggies for a few days if she has GI upset) may also help. As for the toe, that is very common in commercially bred birds. If it is causing trouble I would have it examined when you are able, but provide low, flat perches and platforms for her to hang out on in the meantime. This can help her stretch the toe and have a place to relax without losing balance. If she doesn't improve in a day or so, or seems to get worse, it is best to try and find a bird vet in your area that can see her right away.

It sounds like Xena is feeling pretty ill and should be seen by a vet. Issues such as GI upset, obstructions, egg-binding, illness, nutritional issues, parasites, etc can all cause the symptoms you are seeing and would need to be examined by a vet and treated. In the meantime, gently massaging around her vent and using a warm wet washcloth to loosen and remove the stool may provide some relief and help her go to the bathroom again. Keeping her in a warm hospital cage and eating and drinking as much as possible may also help until you can be seen by a vet.

Without examining your bird in person, or knowing any other symptoms beside "loose stool" it would be impossible to tell what is going on with Kiwi. If she is listless and doesn't seem to be doing well, or has an infection, speaking with the vet that examined her and prescribed the antibiotic syrup is best as they will best know her case history. Keeping her warm, in a clean cage, and with easy access to food and water can help. Making sure she is eating a balanced diet and not just sunflower seeds (which are very fatty and could be causing the diarrhea) can also help to get her feeling better. If the medication isn't helping or she isn't feeling better, seeking another appointment in person is best.

He needs to be seen by a veterinarian if he is ill. Providing a warm environment, simulating a warm incubator, could give aid, but a veterinary visit is warranted. Without knowing what the clinical signs are for the illness, can not give any other advice. Good luck.

Thanks for your question, and I am sorry that this is happening to Pete! There are a number of things that can cause blood in the droppings, and many of them are treatable. I saw that Pete is a female - I’m not sure if she has ever laid eggs, but problems with the reproductive system can result in blood. Also, infections in the urinary or gastrointestinal tract can also result in blood. These are treatable, or manageable, for the most part. I would recommend taking Pete to a veterinarian as she is about halfway through her lifespan now, so she may have many years left! After an exam, your vet may recommend blood work to evaluate systemic health or radiographs. They will also make recommendations about treatments, which may include pain medications or antibiotics. I'm sorry to hear Ophelia isn't doing well. If she's had any other signs of illness such as changes in eating and drinking habits (drinking less water), or seems listless, is losing weight, etc. I would be concerned that there is something underlying such as an illness, infection or even parasites which are also causing the stool changes. You didn't mention if you give her treats or have changed her diet, but sudden changes in diet or an excess of fruits and veggie treats can sometimes cause color and stool changes, which should resolve after getting used to the new food, or removing any extras other than her regular diet. Pellets in diets can also sometimes cause stool changes or color changes as well. If she is otherwise normal and healthy and you made this change, then giving it a day or two to see if it returns to normal may help. However, if the problem continues, she seems in distress, or you haven't made any changes, then having your vet take a look and bringing in a sample of Ophelia's stool to your vet for a fecal test is best to rule out more serious issues.

Watery yellow stool can be caused by a large number of things including illness, organ dysfunction, parasites, GI issues, too many treats, etc. If it just started recently and you are feeding new snacks or treats, removing them and only providing Charlie's diet for a few days may help resolve the issue. If the problem persists, or you see other symptoms, seeking veterinary care in person (along with bringing in a stool sample) is best to try and determine the cause and have it treated.
