My bird's leg band cut circulation. Will its foot get circulation back?

Hi Laura and sorry to hear about Tang's leg, If the band is constricting blood flow to/from the leg - this is an emergency. Please take him to the vet ASAP to have the band removed safely. Do not try to remove it yourself as it is easy to fracture their bone while trying to do so. The longer it stays like this, the greater the chances that he will lose it!

This may indicate compromised blood flow to the limb. It is possible Fidel may lose the leg. You'll need to have him examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet to determine if the leg can be saved. Have him seen today if you can, since infection can set in if the limb is "dead".

Hi, It looks like Charm’s foot had trauma that caused a break in the skin (hence the bleeding). What you are seeing now looks like a scab that needs to heal. I would suspect Charm is in some degree of pain or discomfort and I can’t rule out that a bone may have been broken, so a trip to the veterinarian for an exam and pain medications (and perhaps antibiotics) would be best. In the meantime, keep the foot clean and dry as the scabs heal, lower any perches if she seems hesitant to weight bear, and make sure she eats and drinks well.

Carefully cut off the plastic ring immediately. If he is lucky the circulation was not cut off completely. After cutting off the ring, inspect the area for injuries. If there is no open wound prepare some warm water (warmer than luke warm, but not so hot that it hurts) and dip the foot in it for a minute or two in order to encourage circulation. If you cannot take off the plastic or if you find a wound please take this baby to a vet or Pet ER today.

It sounds like your bird may have bumblefoot, or an infection of the foot which can cause oozing of debris, pus, blood, etc. Other possible causes can include a sprain or break to the foot. If you see a visible wound, you can try soaking the foot in epsom salts and then using an antiseptic like blu-kote, however if it is badly infected or broken this is something that needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately as severe infections can make a bird ill very quickly and potentially lead to death. Until you can get to your vet, keeping Sunapana warm and in a hospital cage without perches and with food and water dishes that are easy to is best.

I am so sorry that this happened to you and Pluto! From the photos, Pluto appears to be putting weight on both of the legs, which is good news. Also, the toes are all about the same size from what I can see, which is good as well, as hopefully that means there is not too much swelling. Pluto may be painful on the toes, and that could be why he is holding them away from the other toes. You can do one of two things - you can monitor for the next 24 hours or so, and if there is any worsening of the signs (limping, not putting weight on the leg, or if the toes turn red or are bigger than the other toes), you can take Pluto to a veterinarian for evaluation. The second option is taking him to a veterinarian sooner to get him looked at, if you are concerned right now. At the veterinarian, they can take a feel of the legs and ensure there are no broken bones. If needed, they may recommend performing radiographs (x-rays) to evaluate this as well. They may prescribe pain medications as well, depending on what they find. Please do not give Pluto any human medications, as many of them are harmful to our feathered friends. Thanks for reaching out. There are concerns the leg has become injured, either a sprain, dislocation or fracture. Even an injured toe can be painful enough to not allow weight bearing. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Removing perches and providing a soft towel on the bottom of the cage can give comfort. Ensure that food and water are within reach. If there continues to be blood on the toe, gently clean with a moistened warm water on a washcloth. Keep the environment clean to prevent standing in feces and contaminating any wounds. Good luck.
