My bird is flying into walls and its leg looks hurt. What should I do?

It is possible that Angie had trauma to her leg. If she did get soft tissue injury this usually resolves with time. However a bruise can also be due to a fracture, bleeding issue or infection. I would recommend taking her to a vet to determine the cause of the bruise and also start her on pain medication for better control of pain/comfort.

Hello! If your female bird is trying to escape your male bird, I would recommend keeping them separated. Frustrated and scared birds often hurt themselves attempting to escape situations. When a bird holds up their leg, it is the equivalent of a human limping and is a sign of pain. I would recommend taking her into be seen by an avian vet. They will likely recommend x-rays. The x-rays will ensure that she has no broken bones, as well as looking at her abdominal organs. Abdominal problems are a common cause of leg issues in birds because their abdominal organs are on top of their sciatic (leg) nerve. They will likely recommend an anti-inflammatory to help with her pain and make other treatment recommendations based off of x-rays and physical exam. I hope this helps! It is best to move Robin to a separate hospital cage to allow the foot to begin to heal without being picked on by other birds. Providing low, flat perches or no perches at all along with shallow easy to access food and water dishes may help. If there is a visible wound or break, treating the wound or seeking veterinary care to have any broken legs treated is best. If the swelling continues, worsens, or other symptoms of illness appear, seeking vet help ASAP is needed.

I'm sorry your birds got into a spat. First, if you haven't already, make sure they are separated. If Twitter is not using the leg, I would recommend that he be seen by an avian veterinarian. The leg could be fractured, or have extensive soft tissue injury. Since you saw blood, we know there is an open wound, and infection may be a possibility. At a minimum Twitter may need a prescription for pain medication. Keep Twitter in a warm, quiet low stress area until you can get him seen. Make sure that he is eating and drinking normally.

Hi, It looks like Charm’s foot had trauma that caused a break in the skin (hence the bleeding). What you are seeing now looks like a scab that needs to heal. I would suspect Charm is in some degree of pain or discomfort and I can’t rule out that a bone may have been broken, so a trip to the veterinarian for an exam and pain medications (and perhaps antibiotics) would be best. In the meantime, keep the foot clean and dry as the scabs heal, lower any perches if she seems hesitant to weight bear, and make sure she eats and drinks well.

Thanks for reaching out about Jelly and including photos. First observe to see if she can eat and crack hard things like seeds. Structures internal of the beak can be damaged and these will not likely heal well on their own. It the beak is just bruised, it should be fine. The foot appears bruised also, but if fractured, probably will recommend cage rest as most digits are minimally displaced with a fracture and tend to heal fine, as long as not an open wound. If having difficulty perching, removing perches and allow to stand on fluffy towel on bottom of cage, for several days. If not eating, need to see the vet. Good luck
