My bird hit window: cracked beak, purple leg, not eating. What to do?

The thump into the window appears to have caused physical injury and possibly neurological damage. This would have to be confirmed by a veterinarian. The bird may recover, but it could take some time and may require extensive supportive care. Ideally, it should be examined by a wildlife veterinarian or relinquished to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator. If treatment is not possible, humane euthanasia may have to be considered. Keep it warm and as stress free as possible. Prop the bird up with a towel and wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling. Use a dropper or small syringe to provide water. Offer a fortified seed mix for finches. You can also try a handfeeding formula for extra nutrition.

Even if you do not have a specific avian vet, it is best to see if there are any vets in your area that could take a look. Internal injuries could be present that could be affecing Indi's ability to eat or perform normal behaviors. Until you can get to the vet, or if you can't get to one, the best course of action is to keep Indi in a calm, quiet and warm hospital cage with low perches and easy access to food and water to minimize any further injury. However, if he doesn't perk back up, he needs to be seen in person by a professional as soon as possible.

You might have to travel to the vet as this is probably beyond what can be done at home. A warm environment, remove perches to prevent further falling. Diet needs to be appropriate to facilitate bone growth, healing and health. Is there a wildlife rehabilitation group local that can help? Good luck.

A loose leg is likely a fracture, dislocation or neurologic problems, each requiring a veterinary visit to treat. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to weak bones, more likely to fracture. Veterinary intervention sooner than later can improve prognosis and recovery. Provide supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range, as young birds have difficulty thermoregulating. Offering food and water via a syringe might give some hydration and energy. Good luck.
