My budgie has a swollen leg and can't balance. What should I do?

Inability to perch and balance are very concerning signs, and seeking vet care is needed to find the problem. Even if the vets in your area do not specialize in birds, seeing if one can still take a look is best. Injury to the legs, illness, malnutrition, stroke and a myriad of other issues can cause balance and perching issues, and they require medical care in person to treat. At home you can try to offer low, flat perches and food and water in shallow dishes that are easy to get in and out of, however seeking veterinary care in person is needed to get Bluey feeling better.

It is best to seek veterinary care from a vet immediately so that the bird can be examined and treated. Broken bones in birds can very quickly lead to severe infections and requires professional treatment.

It sounds like your bird may have bumblefoot, or an infection of the foot which can cause oozing of debris, pus, blood, etc. Other possible causes can include a sprain or break to the foot. If you see a visible wound, you can try soaking the foot in epsom salts and then using an antiseptic like blu-kote, however if it is badly infected or broken this is something that needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately as severe infections can make a bird ill very quickly and potentially lead to death. Until you can get to your vet, keeping Sunapana warm and in a hospital cage without perches and with food and water dishes that are easy to is best.

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

Thanks for reaching out about Pablo. This could either be a leg injury (fracture, luxation, neurologic) or an enlarged organ (kidney, testicle) placing pressure on nerve to that leg. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. For now, remove perches and place a thick towel on the bottom of the cage on which to stand. I am sorry Bahloul is not feeling well. Unfortunately for Bahloul there is no easy fix to her leg. I would recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible to be evaluated. I am concerned about viral disease, infectious disease but also her kidney function. She most likely needs some blood work and possibly an x-ray to determine the cause of her leg swelling. I hope Bahloul feels better soon

If the leg is currently broken, it needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away as breaks in bird bones can lead to serious infection. If it was broken or deformed in the past but now healed, there may not be much that can be done for it, but a vet can still take a look. Otherwise, changing Parrot's environment so it is easier for him to perch, get around, get into and out of food and water dishes, etc may help.
