My horse has a painful hoof growth and is favoring a leg. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 800 lbs

My horse has a weird growth above his hoof. It is painful to touch. He’s not very lame but I can see he favours the leg at the walk and trot a tiny bit. Seems like some type of abscess that turned into a place where the hoof grows? Any ideas on what this could be or how to go about treating it? I’d like to mention that I live in South America and I am the only person that can help this horse there are NO vets in my area. Thank you so much!

Hello. This may be a sarcoid, but without a biopsy there is no way to know definitively. Unfortunately, this site prohibits us from giving out any kind of medical advice, & ethically, it would just be wrong to do so. There are other advice sites that are more generous with information since we can have an actual chat. You might try to access one of these & see if someone can help you there. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
