What causes my pregnant goat's udder to be uneven and one side larger?

Hello! I have a 2.5 y/o goat who's udder has been enlarging in anticipation of giving birth (supposedly pregnant). 4-5 weeks ago her udder was even and now it is not. One side is way larger. She has never had mastitis, she had a single kid in Jan. and the owners did not milk her. Perhaps the kid favored one side. Her udder does not feel like it has fever it feels normal. What could cause this in her? She has been growing her udder for six weeks I also ponder if it is a false pregnancy.

The left side does look much bigger than the right, but does not appear infected. It is not uncommon for there to be some asymmetry between the two udders, but I agree that this is rather pronounced.

Given the size of the udders, I would expect that she would be due any day now. False pregnancy is a possibility, but rather rare, so I wouldn't be too suspicious of this yet.

I would just keep an eye on the udder for any change in color or discharge like pus or blood. This would indicate that there is an infection.

If it has an infection or you are otherwise concerned, then it would be best to have a veterinarian check her out. They could have a better look at the udder, test it for signs of infection and easily be able to check for pregnancy.

Yes - the hardness and difficulty to express milk are typical signs of mastitis and she will require urgent veterinary treatment in order to prevent long term damage. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections are generally both required but vary on the different types of mastitis (taking a milk sample to your vet is very helpful to determine this); regular emptying of the affected milk also reduces the burden of infection. Is my goat pregnant? Udders developing after steroid injection.

Hello. Without knowing how long ago the doe was in with the buck, I cannot rule out pregnancy, but a steroid injection could cause a pregnant animal to abort, so watch for any unusual discharge. This might also be a false pregnancy, idiopathic lactation (lactogenesis), mastitis or some other infection. I would suggest having your doe tested for CAE, & possibly tested to see if she is developing mastitis. Your veterinarian can do this for you very easily. My goat had a swollen udder and acted sick. Is it mastitis or thiamine deficiency?

Hi there. Thiamine deficiency doesn't typically resolve that rapidly, so they is unlikely to be the cause. It does sound like she may have mastitis as this will cause a firm, swollen udder. If your goat is on a balanced diet of high quality grass hay, you shouldn't need to supplement with anything. You need to have a veterinarian examine her to make sure the kids are alive and that she has enough room to have them naturally after her injury. Why is my sheep's udder growing after stillbirth? Is she pregnant?

Most sheep are seasonal breeders and will come into heat in the fall with a spring birth, however some breeds (such as the hair breeds like Katahdin) can breed out of season, and may become pregnant in the off season, especially if she showed signs of heat and is in with a ram. However, if she wasn't actively nursing or being milked, her udders should have dried up over time. Udder development can occur if she was rebred, but I would recommend calling out a vet for a complete health check to confirm the pregnancy and make sure everything is OK.

Why is my goat's milk pink after birth? Mastitis or calcium?

I would definitely be thinking mastitis and not calcium deficiency. It's best to have a veterinarian examine Strawberry so they can diagnose the specific problem and provide the necessary treatment. For now, it's best to strip the milk from that utter twice a day while massaging it with warm water to ensure the goat kids are not drinking it and to help remove the infection. You may need to feed the kids milk replacer if they are not getting enough milk from the other utter. I hope that helps and Strawberry gets better soon.
