My goat had a swollen udder and acted sick. Is it mastitis or thiamine deficiency?

Yes - the hardness and difficulty to express milk are typical signs of mastitis and she will require urgent veterinary treatment in order to prevent long term damage. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections are generally both required but vary on the different types of mastitis (taking a milk sample to your vet is very helpful to determine this); regular emptying of the affected milk also reduces the burden of infection. Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry that Queen is having this issue. The exact cause of udder edema is not known in most cases. Mastitis is probably the number one reason so I think your vet was correct in treating for this first. It would be helpful to know if she is currently pregnant or if she has a calf on her now as the differential diagnosis would be different depending on the answer. Here are some reasons that may be causing this: * cow is close to calving * overfeeding grain * overfeeding sodium and/or potassium * heavy feeding of legume forages (results in excessive protein, calcium and potassium intake) * feeding soy cakes Some things you can try that may help improve the edema: * massaging the udder in an upward direction for 10-20 minutes twice a day after milking so as to promote circulation of fluids * forcing moderate exercise which helps stimulate lymph circulation * administering drugs such as diuretics can be used to speed up the removal of water from the body (must check with your vet first) * hydrotherapy of the udder - use cold water like from a hose to firmly spray the udder for 15 minutes twice a day So, if you and your vet can safely rule out true mastitis then I would suspect this is just edema that may be dietary related. Go over your cows diet thoroughly with your vet to see if you can get it figured out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The left side does look much bigger than the right, but does not appear infected. It is not uncommon for there to be some asymmetry between the two udders, but I agree that this is rather pronounced. Given the size of the udders, I would expect that she would be due any day now. False pregnancy is a possibility, but rather rare, so I wouldn't be too suspicious of this yet. I would just keep an eye on the udder for any change in color or discharge like pus or blood. This would indicate that there is an infection. If it has an infection or you are otherwise concerned, then it would be best to have a veterinarian check her out. They could have a better look at the udder, test it for signs of infection and easily be able to check for pregnancy. I hope that helps and Iris has a kid soon.

If only one teat is enlarged and she is not eating properly there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. I would definitely be thinking mastitis and not calcium deficiency. It's best to have a veterinarian examine Strawberry so they can diagnose the specific problem and provide the necessary treatment. For now, it's best to strip the milk from that utter twice a day while massaging it with warm water to ensure the goat kids are not drinking it and to help remove the infection. There are many diseases that can cause something like this. I do not know what common diseases you see in Oman so it is difficult for me to comment. You are better off trying to get a vet to come to your farm and check the goats. We do not have enough information here to be helpful. My best guess is that this is papilloma virus warts. The problem can spread through the herd after purchase of an infected animal. Some self-cure at the end of lactation, some do not regress or will return the next year. A few transform into squamous cell carcinomas (cancer).

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From your picture, the appearance of his rumen seems pretty normal. A healthy, well-fed goat can seem to be quite bloated. If he is acting normal, you have already done all the correct things. Limit his grazing on lush pastures, give him only a small handful of grain once you start him back, and get him off the alfalfa & on a good prairie grass hay. This & fresh water is all most goats will need. Take care.
