Should I worry about prominent veins on my horse's legs and face?

Has your horse been seen by an equine vet? If not then this would be the next step. Swollen legs/veins can be a sign of heart disease. I would also have the horse tested for Equine viral arteriitis. There is a possibility that it once had this disease and these are problems connected to arteriitis. he cellulitis and the abscess can have caused sepsis which in turn caused heart problems. So these are two diseases that definitely need to be checked by an equine vet. There are a few other diseases that could cause swollen blood vessels, so your vet may want to take some blood for checking organ function as well.

It is prominent, but not necessarily abnormal as long as he’s otherwise acting normal. If he is favoring the leg at all, or there are any masses on the leg, or any swelling noted, take him to your vet. But if he is otherwise fine there is no cause for concern. Yes, dogs have arteries and veins that can become more visible when they are excited (higher blood pressure) or during heat cycle. The veins that you have highlighted are carrying blood from the mammary glands and can be more prominent while in Precious is in heat. These are not a cause for concern. :-)

Are you talking about the veins on the side of his legs? Those appear normal for his breed and its nothing to worry about. The line on his left side along his ribs is harder to tell what is going on there. There's not a vein, per se, that would be there to be prominent normally. Does the skin appear normal in this line? On thinner areas of the dog such as the lower back leg, you can see the veins and it's not a problem. That being said, you can see inflammation of the superficial veins in dogs caused by an infection or formation of a clot. Without seeing Rey in person, I can't say for certain if this is ok or not. Some dogs have bulging veins on their body, the vein may be visible all the time or only occasionally, usually when your dog has been having some type of physical exercise which causes the blood flow and blood pressure to increase. everything i mentioned is of course normal but if the vein appears randomly when your dog is at rest for example that would be something i would probably recommend to check (such as blood pressure at rest and heart rate at rest) to rule out any medical condition.

If Sophie is sweating and trying to lay down or appears in distress at all I would recomend calling an equine vet now. Sweating, protruding veins can be signs of pain or discomfort and if she is constantly trying to lay down that is not typical behavior. She may be colicky or possibly miscarrying the foal. Try keeping her on her feet and walking as you get in touch with a vet. Do not let her down to roll. If she is kicking or biting at her flank those are further signs that she has abdominal pain.
