My horse's leg is wrapped. How do I know if it's too tight?

The temperature of a horse is done rectally. You can feel the pulse of the dog from numerous spots on the dog including through the chest wall and from the femoral artery located high on the inner side of the thigh. Check the temperature of the affected leg. It should be approximately the same temperature as the other leg. If it is much cooler you need to take your dog to the vet for a recheck. If the temperature is similar you can rebandage the leg, but make sure it is not too tight. One way to awoid this is to put lots of padding around the leg before putting the previously unrolled and then rerolled sticky bandage on. It may also be a good idea to confine your dog to rest. You may have to rebandage the leg as soon as the swelling has subsided, as the bandage will loosen up. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, you will need to take Sterling to your vet for an exam.

I recommend wrapping the leg to keep it clean and prevent her from licking it. While honey promotes healing and I do use it in some of my wounds, I would advise you to also consult the veterinarian that initially treated Holly.

Hello, sorry to hear about Hunter. You're right that some of that may just be dried up blood. What needs to be addressed is the the size of the wound where that blood came from. The biggest concern is for an infection. The wound needs to be cleaned and thoroughly examined by your veterinarian and decide what the next step in treatment should be. Hi, if you are able to pass two fingers between the bandage and the neck, the bandage is lose enough. If you remove the bandage completely or make it too lose Lily will be able to take the cone off and then she might lick her wound. I would recommend to loosen it slightly f you are unable to pass two fingers between the neck and the bandage. You could change the plastic collar to an inflatable one, I would recommend to do it tomorrow morning so that you have any issues you can always pop Lily into your vet and get help placing the collar back ! She looks quite cheeky and smart ! Hope this helps !

It does look OK overall but the part that’s not healing is due to proud flesh growth (excessive granulation tissue). Usually the proud flesh needs to be trimmed off to get it to heal and the vet can give you something to put on it to keep the proud flesh down until it heals completely. If he is licking at it, use an Elizabethan collar (cone) or apply a light bandage. use caution when applying bandages though. if you make it too tight, you may cause more harm than good. Restrict Bruno's activity to just short leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play until he is feeling better.
