How to check horse temp, dog pulse, and bandage a horse leg?

If you check your dog's pu;se at the jugular vein in the groove of the ventral neck(there is one either side), the result is correct. Count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 and you have heartbeats per minute (Pulse frequency)

Check the temperature of the affected leg. It should be approximately the same temperature as the other leg. If it is much cooler you need to take your dog to the vet for a recheck. If the temperature is similar you can rebandage the leg, but make sure it is not too tight. One way to awoid this is to put lots of padding around the leg before putting the previously unrolled and then rerolled sticky bandage on. It may also be a good idea to confine your dog to rest. You may have to rebandage the leg as soon as the swelling has subsided, as the bandage will loosen up. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, you will need to take Sterling to your vet for an exam.

Great question! It should be a worry that you wrap Hunter's leg too tightly, and you should be able to fit a finger between the bandage and his leg. If you can't do that, then it's too tight. I hope this helps :-)

Hello. Yes, you can use the thermometer you have. Put a little lubricant on the end ( even a little cooking oil will work ) & gently insert it into the rectum. Just go far enough in that you can no longer see the silver tip ( so you do not have to put the entire thermometer all the way in ). Wait for the beep & read. It's not difficult to take your dog's temperature rectally, but it is a task best performed by two people. Have someone hold the dog still, preferably someone the dog knows and likes. If no help is available, make your dog lie down on her side and hold her as best you can, while talking to her soothingly. After shaking down the thermometer (or use a digital thermometer) and lubricating it well with petroleum jelly or K-Y, lift his tail and gently push the thermometer in. Insert the thermometer from one to three inches, depending on the size of your dog and hold it in place for at least two minutes (or until it beeps, for a digital). After you remove the thermometer, wipe it clean and read the temperature by the height of the silver column of mercury on the thermometer scale. A temperature of 100.5° to 102°F degrees is normal.
