My spayed puppy's cone/bandage is too tight. Can I remove or change?

Hi. I got my puppy spayed today. She’s got a bandage around her neck and a plastic collar however I feel like it’s too tight for her and she doesn’t look comfortable and starts choking sometimes. Is it okay to remove the bandage and leave the cone only? I also got her another cone but I’m not sure if I can change it or should leave the plastic one?

Hi, if you are able to pass two fingers between the bandage and the neck, the bandage is lose enough. If you remove the bandage completely or make it too lose Lily will be able to take the cone off and then she might lick her wound. I would recommend to loosen it slightly f you are unable to pass two fingers between the neck and the bandage. You could change the plastic collar to an inflatable one, I would recommend to do it tomorrow morning so that you have any issues you can always pop Lily into your vet and get help placing the collar back ! She looks quite cheeky and smart ! Hope this helps !

I am sorry we weren't able to get to your question sooner. Its possible that the cone is too tight. She may have bit her tongue or lip leading to the bleeding, though. Loosen the cone to the point that you can comfortably but snugly get 2 fingers between the cone and the skin of the neck. if she has had any continued coughing, or if she seems to be struggling at all to breathe, please don't delay, get her to the vet immediately. Dog spay incision: Can I use a band-aid if the cone comes off?

Hello, sorry to hear about Poochie. It may be safer to put a shirt on as the adhessive of the bandaid may cause too much movement at the incision line when being removed. A shirt and her e-collar should be sufficient to keep the incision covered and protected. Hope this helps and best of luck. If you do decide to place a bandage, then I would leave it on for 5 days before removing it so that the incision is not messed with too much. Additionally, make sure the bandaid is large enough so that there is no adhessive portion directly on the incision. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog's spay cone is torn. Does she still need it after 10 days?

Her incision should be healed by now so you should not need another cone. I would take that one off while you are home and make sure she's not licking the area. Distract her if she does, and if there are stitches and she's still going after them then you may need to get another cone and leave it on longer. My spayed kitten is stressed, won't wear cone, biting stitches. Vets closed.

You can try to use a pet shirt or baby onesie to cover the stitches. Or make a belly bandage using whatever you have around the house - like clean dish towels and duct tape. If you have a small kennel or carrier, Bonnie may need to stay in there to stay confined since excessive running or jumping can cause internal sutures to loosen up and cause bleeding problems. You may call your vet tomorrow or look at pet stores for different styles of e-collars. Some are shaped like a cone, some are floppy like a sunhat and can be worn pointing towards the shoulders, and some are inflatable donuts.

My dog's spay incision has fluid and scab. Can I remove the e-collar?

Yes the fluid was probably from her being overly active. I would not remove the e-collar until the scab area has healed like the rest of the incision. You can take it off while you are with her and see if she licks it. Then put it back on for a few more days when you’re not able to monitor her. My dog ripped bandages, hates cone. What's a better cone alternative?

Try getting her one of the inflatable donut type collars to prevent her from getting to it. They are available at most large pet supply stores. I would contact your veterinarian today instead of waiting until Monday.

My dog just got neutered. He keeps taking off his cone. What now?

Hi ! With my dog I used a medical pet vest, that it’s fabric, can be washed and it is well tolerated.There is a XXXs size for Chihuahuas. The alternative is to have your vet put the buster collar on Kobe, you could give the collar a last try once fitted properly. Hope this helps !
