What's causing a hard, growing bump on my older horse's lower jaw?

Check for bite marks (snake bite). If you cannot find any, there is likely some problem with a tooth or tooth root, or salivary gland. Your horse could also have been kicked there or, when eating, have bitten in some foreign material in the hay that could have caused a mouth injury. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours I would call out a veterinarian for an exam of your horse's mouth and face.

It is most likely a cyst but of course I cannot be 100% sure just by looking at a photo. I suggest you just monitor it for now. If it becomes larger or starts to bother her you should have your vet out to check her. Cancer is unlikely.

This looks like an epulis, a fairly common benign tumor in dogs. It occurs more often in short faced dog breeds. I recommend getting it checked by your vet to determine what kind of growth it is and what needs to be done about it. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly imaging depending on if you vet believes they need it. Based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and the best course of treatment.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I notice the bump on Clover but unfortunately, it is generally impossible to tell what the lump is based on appearance alone. It can be anything from a bug bite (especially since it has gotten smaller), a mass, an abscess, a cyst, a salivary gland or something else. If it is not bothering her right now and does not get bigger, I would monitor her. If it is still there in the morning, I would contact your veterinarian. Your vet may want to feel the area and determine if additional diagnostics are warranted such as a fine needle aspirate OR something else if it does not seem like a mass/cyst/abscess. Good luck!

Hello. It is always best to have all unusual lumps & bumps examined by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. This lesion does not look particularly dangerous & actually looks more like some type of fly bite or chronic irritation, so you might just treat with a topical ointment for a week or so & see if it resolves. She is a young horse, & most cancers will develop at a mucocutaneous junction, such as near the eye, vulva or mouth. We rarely see a skin lesion turn dangerous in this particular region. This lump seems to be due to an extremely severe inflammation of the conjunctiva (chemosis). Differentials include cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops as a first approach but it is best to perform a full ophthalmologic examination. Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw. It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able. I hope this helps! I wish Lucky the best!
